Chapter 8: A New Dawn

Thomas finished his phone call with Marcus in the cool parking lot.

The legal machinery was already moving to protect his son.

He took a deep breath, feeling lighter than he had in years.

He walked back into the diner and slid into the booth across from Ethan.

A towering stack of buttermilk pancakes had just arrived at the table.

The boy’s eyes were wide as he poured a thick stream of syrup over the top.

"Looks like you are going to need some help with that," Thomas teased.

Ethan giggled, a sweet and pure sound that melted the remaining ice in Thomas’s heart.

"I can eat it all by myself," Ethan declared proudly.

They sat together in the quiet diner, sharing the meal and a comfortable silence.

The horrible events of the evening finally felt like a distant, faded memory.

Once the plates were entirely empty, Thomas left a generous tip on the table.

They walked back out to the car, the night air feeling a little less cold now.

"Where are we going to sleep tonight, Dad?" Ethan asked, stifling a massive yawn.

"I booked us a nice room at a quiet hotel downtown," Thomas replied gently.

"Tomorrow, we will start looking for a real house."

He lifted Ethan into the car, noticing the boy was already half-asleep again.

The short drive to the hotel was peaceful and completely undisturbed.

Thomas checked them in quickly, carrying his sleeping son up to the penthouse room.

He laid Ethan gently on the soft, massive bed and pulled the thick covers over his shoulders.

Thomas sat in the comfortable armchair by the large window, watching the city below.

He silently promised himself that he would never fail his son again.

As the first golden light of dawn began to peek over the horizon, Thomas finally closed his eyes.

They were entirely safe, and tomorrow was a brand new day.
