Chapter 6: The Safe Haven

The cold gravel crunched beneath Thomas's polished shoes as he reached his car.
He gently placed Ethan into the passenger seat and buckled the heavy seatbelt around him.
Thomas took off his suit jacket and draped it carefully over his son's shivering shoulders.
He closed the door softly and walked around to the driver's side.
The engine roared to life, shattering the quiet stillness of the wealthy neighborhood.
Thomas put the car in drive and pressed his foot firmly on the gas pedal.
He watched the massive, glowing estate shrink into nothingness in the rearview mirror.
He would never let that place, or the woman inside it, cast a shadow over them again.
The drive was long, bathed in the soft orange glow of passing streetlights.
The rhythmic hum of the tires against the asphalt slowly lulled Ethan into a deep exhaustion.
Thomas kept one hand firmly on the steering wheel.
He reached his other hand across the center console and gently rested it on Ethan's knee.
The boy did not wake, but he shifted comfortably under the heavy suit jacket.
After an hour of aimless driving, Thomas spotted the neon sign of a small twenty-four-hour diner.
He pulled into the empty parking lot and turned off the engine.
"Ethan," Thomas whispered softly.
"Wake up, buddy."
The little boy blinked his tired eyes and looked around the unfamiliar parking lot.
"Are we safe here?" Ethan asked, his voice still small and fragile.
"We are completely safe," Thomas promised.
"I just wanted to get you something warm to drink."
They stepped out of the car and walked hand-in-hand into the brightly lit diner.
The smell of fresh coffee and frying bacon was a stark contrast to the sterile perfume of the party.
They slid into a cracked vinyl booth near the back corner.
A friendly waitress brought them two large mugs of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream.
Ethan wrapped his small hands around the warm ceramic mug.
A tiny, hesitant smile finally broke through the dirt and dried tears on his face.
Thomas watched him, feeling the heavy burden of the night begin to lift.

The cage, the cruelty, and the fake world they left behind were entirely in the past.
From now on, it would only be the two of them.
