Chapter 11 - The Recording They Forgot.

The detective searched the memory card by timestamp while Nathan stood behind him with both hands pressed against the kitchen counter.
Isabella remembered the night because Camille had ordered her to stay in the shed after dinner until she stopped asking when Nathan would return.
The recording began with rain tapping the shed roof.
Then a door opened.
Grant's voice entered the audio first.
"This has gone too far."
Camille answered with a sharp whisper.
"No, it has gone exactly as far as it needed to go."
Nathan felt Isabella move closer to him.
Grant sounded nervous.
"Bruises were never part of the plan."
"Then she should have stopped fighting me."
Nathan's face went numb.
The detective glanced at him but did not stop the recording.
Grant said, "We only needed Nathan to look unstable and the girl to look difficult."
Camille laughed softly.
"You wanted control of the trust without looking like you wanted control of the trust."
Grant did not deny it.
"And you wanted this house."
"I wanted what Amelia stole from me."
Nathan closed his eyes.
Camille continued.
"If Nathan signs the treatment papers, Isabella goes to Westridge."
"And if he doesn't?"
There was a pause.
"Then we use the pills."
Nathan opened his eyes.
Grant's voice dropped.
"I told you I won't hurt him."
"Nobody said hurt."
Camille sounded almost bored.
"A bottle in his room, a few photographs, a concerned therapist, and a frightened child repeating the right sentences will be enough."
The detective leaned closer to the laptop.
Grant whispered, "And if Isabella tells the truth?"
Camille answered immediately.
"Then nobody believes her."
Isabella lowered her head.
Nathan put one arm around her shoulders.
The recording continued for another minute.
Grant mentioned an emergency guardianship petition.
Camille mentioned a psychiatrist who owed her a favor.
Then Grant said the sentence that changed the entire case.
"Once Nathan is declared unfit, I become trustee."
Camille replied, "And once Isabella is placed away from him, she becomes manageable."
The detective stopped the recording.
The kitchen was silent except for the refrigerator motor.
Nathan looked at Isabella.
"You heard all of this that night?"
She nodded.
"I didn't know what trustee meant."
Nathan's throat tightened.
"You shouldn't have had to know any of it."
The detective immediately called the prosecutor assigned to the child abuse report.
Within an hour, officers began preparing warrants for Camille's devices and Grant's office.
Nathan should have felt relief.
Instead, he felt fear sharpening.
Camille had already demonstrated that she moved quickly when cornered.
At 11:26 that morning, Nathan's attorney received notice that the emergency hearing had been moved forward.
It would begin in ninety minutes.
Camille claimed immediate danger to Isabella.
The timing was impossible unless someone had warned her that new evidence had been found.
The detective looked at the laptop.
"Do not take the original memory card to court."
Nathan nodded.
A secure copy was made.
The original went into evidence.
Nathan and Isabella arrived at the courthouse through a side entrance.
Reporters were already outside.
Someone had leaked the accusation that Nathan Hale, prominent investor and widowed father, was suffering a dangerous mental collapse.
Camille walked through the front entrance ten minutes later in a pale blue dress, holding Amelia's old family Bible against her chest.
The image was perfect.
A grieving stepmother carrying the dead wife's Bible while trying to save a child.
Nathan stared at the television monitor in the hallway.
"She stole that from Amelia's room."
His attorney touched his arm.
"Don't react to the theater."
The courtroom doors opened.
Camille passed Nathan without looking at him.
Then she bent slightly toward Isabella.
"You can still fix this," she whispered.
The bailiff immediately stepped between them.
Nathan heard the threat hidden beneath the gentle words.
Isabella heard it too.
But this time, instead of shrinking, she looked directly at Camille.
"No," Isabella said.

It was one word.
Yet Nathan realized it was the first thing his daughter had said to Camille without fear since he came home.
