Chapter 12 - The Witness in Blue.

The emergency hearing began with Camille's attorney describing Nathan as a grieving widower whose judgment had deteriorated under pressure.

Nathan sat beside his lawyer and listened without moving.

Across the aisle, Camille looked exhausted in exactly the way a camera would find sympathetic.

She kept Amelia's Bible beside her hand.

The judge reviewed the altered medical authorization, the therapist's consultation notes, and photographs Camille claimed showed Isabella's destructive behavior.

Then Nathan's attorney asked permission to play the shed recording.

Camille's lawyer objected.

The judge allowed a limited portion pending authentication.

Camille's face remained calm until her own voice filled the courtroom.

"You can come out when you understand that your father chose me."

The judge looked up.

Camille's attorney stopped writing.

Then the second recording played.

Grant's voice said, "Once Nathan is declared unfit, I become trustee."

Camille's voice answered, "And once Isabella is placed away from him, she becomes manageable."

For the first time, Camille lost control of her expression in public.

She turned toward Grant's empty seat as if betrayed by his absence.

The judge ordered a recess and requested immediate involvement from the child protection investigator.

Nathan thought the worst was finally over.

Then Camille's attorney stood.

"Your Honor, the defense disputes the authenticity and context of these recordings."

He produced a new document.

It was a sworn declaration from Peter Sloan, the house manager.

Nathan stared at Peter's name.

The declaration claimed Nathan had instructed staff to manufacture evidence against Camille after returning from Chicago.

Nathan turned toward his attorney.

"Peter would never sign that."

The courtroom doors opened.

Peter entered wearing a dark blue suit.

His face looked gray.

Camille finally smiled.

The judge called him forward.

Peter swore to tell the truth.

Camille's attorney approached him.

"Mr. Sloan, did Nathan Hale ask you to alter security records?"

Peter looked at Nathan.

"No."

Camille's smile disappeared.

The attorney frowned.

"Did you sign this declaration?"

"Yes."

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

"Then why are you contradicting it?"

Peter swallowed.

"Because I signed it after Mr. Mercer threatened my daughter."

Nathan went still.

Peter explained that Grant had called him before dawn.

Grant knew Peter's daughter was applying for a scholarship through the Hale Foundation.

He threatened to destroy her application and accuse Peter of theft unless Peter signed a prepared statement.

"I signed it," Peter said, his voice breaking.

"Then I called the detective."

The judge looked toward Nathan's attorney.

Peter reached inside his jacket.

A deputy immediately moved closer.

Peter handed over his phone.

"I recorded the second call."

The courtroom remained completely silent while the audio played.

Grant's voice was unmistakable.

"You don't need to believe the statement, Peter."

"You just need to sign it."

Peter answered, "And then you leave my daughter alone?"

Grant said, "If Nathan loses tomorrow, none of this matters anymore."

Camille leaned toward her attorney and whispered urgently.

The judge ordered that no party leave the courthouse while the prosecutor reviewed the new evidence.

Nathan looked at Isabella.

She was sitting beside the child advocate, holding the repaired stuffed rabbit Peter's wife had sewn that morning.

Then a deputy entered and spoke quietly to the prosecutor.

The prosecutor's expression changed.

Grant had been located.

His car was found abandoned near the airport.

Inside were two suitcases, forty thousand dollars in cash, and a passport.

But Grant was not there.

One other item had been found in the trunk.

A blue envelope with Nathan's name written across the front in Amelia's handwriting.
