Chapter 6 - Bruises Under White Light.

The pediatric emergency department smelled like disinfectant and coffee that had been sitting too long.
Nathan hated that Isabella had to be there, but he hated the idea of leaving her injuries undocumented even more.
A nurse photographed the bruises with clinical care and wrote down every location without guessing how they had happened.
Dr. Lena Ortiz examined Isabella privately first, then invited Nathan back into the room after Isabella asked for him.
Nathan sat beside the bed and kept his hands visible in his lap.
He wanted to hold his daughter, but he wanted her to feel that every choice belonged to her now.
Dr. Ortiz spoke softly.
"Isabella told me some things that concern me."
Nathan nodded.
"I understand."
"Some of these marks are consistent with being grabbed firmly."
Nathan looked at the bruise above Isabella's wrist and felt a familiar surge of anger.
He forced himself to breathe slowly.
"And the scratches?"
"She says she fell while carrying a heavy bag across the driveway."
Isabella stared at the blanket.
"It ripped."
Dr. Ortiz asked, "What ripped?"
"The bottom of the bag."
Nathan remembered the thick black plastic scraping the stone.
Isabella's voice grew smaller.
"She made me put rocks in it first."
Nathan turned toward her.
"Rocks?"
Isabella nodded.
"She said my things weren't heavy enough."
The room seemed to narrow around Nathan.
Dr. Ortiz did not react dramatically.
She simply wrote the sentence down.
That calmness made it feel even more real.
A knock sounded at the door.
Camille entered before anyone invited her.
The same attorney stood behind her.
Camille had changed from the silk robe into a cream dress and cardigan, as if dressing for sympathy.
"Isabella, sweetheart."
The girl pulled the blanket up to her chin.
Dr. Ortiz stepped between Camille and the bed.
"I need you to remain outside until I finish."
Camille smiled politely.
"I'm her mother."
Nathan's voice was quiet.
"You're her stepmother."
Camille looked at him with wounded surprise.
"After everything I've done for her, that's what you say?"
Dr. Ortiz opened the door wider.
"Outside, please."
The attorney murmured something to Camille, and she finally left.
Ten minutes later, a hospital social worker arrived.
She explained that a report would be made to child protective services because of Isabella's statements and injuries.
Nathan agreed immediately.
Then the social worker asked whether Nathan had ever witnessed Camille physically hurting Isabella before.
The question cut deeper than he expected.
"No."
"Did Isabella ever tell you she was afraid of Camille?"
Nathan thought of all the small moments he had explained away.
Isabella asking whether she could come on business trips.
Isabella suddenly refusing to stay home on Saturdays.
Isabella becoming silent whenever Camille entered a room.
"Not directly," Nathan said.
The answer sounded pathetic even to him.
Isabella looked at him.
"I tried once."
Nathan's chest tightened.
"When?"
"At the airport."
He remembered.
Two months earlier, Isabella had hugged him too hard before a flight and whispered that she wanted him to stay.
Nathan had kissed her forehead and promised he would be back Friday.
He had thought she missed him.
He had not asked what she feared would happen while he was gone.
Nathan's eyes burned.
"I'm sorry."
Isabella reached for his hand.
"I thought maybe you knew."
That sentence broke something open in him.
Before Nathan could answer, his phone vibrated.
A message from the house manager appeared on the screen.
MR. HALE, YOU NEED TO SEE WHAT WAS FOUND IN MRS. HALE'S CAR.
A photograph followed.
It showed Isabella's missing emergency watch inside Camille's glove compartment.

Beside it was a small silver key Nathan recognized immediately.
The key belonged to Amelia's private lockbox, which had been sealed since her death.
