CHAPTER 1: THE SILENCE BREAKS

Marcus didn’t wait for a response.
He crossed the room in three long strides, snatched the tablet from Rachel’s hands, and turned it off. The sudden silence felt louder than any scream.
“Enough.”
Rachel blinked, stunned. “What is your problem?”
“My problem?” Marcus’s voice was low, controlled—but shaking beneath the surface. “My problem is my pregnant wife is standing there barely able to breathe while holding our sick daughter… and you two are treating this like a vacation.”
Brenda scoffed, sitting up straighter. “Don’t you dare speak to me like that in this house.”
“This house?” Marcus let out a hollow laugh. “You mean our house? The one Maya has been running alone while you sit here doing nothing?”
For the first time, Maya looked up.
