CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH UNFOLDS

Marcus gently took Lily from Maya’s arms. The little girl whimpered weakly, her tiny body burning with fever.
“Why didn’t you call me?” he asked softly.
Maya swallowed. “I didn’t want to cause problems… your mom said I was overreacting.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“She’s been like this since last night,” Maya continued, her voice trembling. “I asked them to help me get medicine, but they said I should ‘learn to manage better’ before the baby comes.”
The room went dead still.
Marcus turned slowly.
“Is that true?”
Brenda crossed her arms. “We’re not her servants. She needs to toughen up.”

Marcus grabbed his phone.
