Chapter 8 - The Recovery

The heavy oak door secured itself with a satisfying, final click.
Daniel exhaled a long, shaky breath, letting the tension completely drain from his shoulders.
He turned his attention back to his mother, who was still shivering in the center of the foyer.
"Let us get you out of those freezing clothes before you catch pneumonia," Daniel insisted gently.
"I will have the actual household staff draw you a hot bath upstairs."
Eleanor nodded gratefully, finally allowing the physical toll of the charade to show.
"A hot bath sounds absolutely wonderful right now," she admitted quietly.
"But first, I need a very strong cup of hot tea."
They walked slowly toward the massive chef's kitchen at the back of the estate.
The polished marble floors reflected the warm, glowing light of the expensive chandeliers above.
Daniel guided his mother to a plush velvet barstool at the kitchen island.
He quickly found a thick, dry towel from a nearby linen cabinet and draped it securely over her trembling shoulders.
"I will make the tea," Daniel said, moving efficiently around the large, modern kitchen.
"You just sit there and try to get warm."
Eleanor watched her son with a deep sense of maternal pride.
He was no longer the confused, heartbroken man who had rushed down the stairs just twenty minutes ago.
He was moving with distinct purpose and clarity, his natural confidence already returning.
"You handled that incredibly well, Daniel," Eleanor praised him softly, clutching the dry towel around her neck.
"Many men would have blindly defended their fiancée, regardless of the glaring evidence."
Daniel set a steaming mug of Earl Grey tea on the marble counter in front of her.
"The evidence was rather impossible to ignore," he replied, a self-deprecating smile touching his lips.
"Plus, I have always trusted your judgment in business, Mother."
"I suppose I should start trusting it more in my personal life as well."
Eleanor wrapped her cold hands around the warm ceramic mug, absorbing the soothing heat.
"You have a brilliant heart, Daniel, but the corporate world does not prepare you for emotional predators," she explained.
"Chloe viewed you strictly as an acquisition, a lucrative merger to save her sinking family."
"I simply executed a hostile takeover to protect my most valuable asset."
Daniel chuckled softly, the familiar business terminology bringing a sense of comforting normalcy back to the room.

"Well, your hostile takeover was incredibly successful," Daniel agreed, leaning against the counter.
"Now, we just have to figure out how to handle the massive public relations nightmare."
