Chapter 9 - The Clean Up

The hot tea slowly chased the remaining chill from Eleanor’s bones.

She took a careful sip from the ceramic mug, letting the warm bergamot flavor soothe her nerves.

Daniel pulled out his smartphone and placed it flat on the polished marble island.

"I should start making the phone calls right now," Daniel said, staring at the dark screen.

"The longer I wait, the faster the ugly rumors will spread through our social circles."

Eleanor gently set her mug down on a small cork coaster.

"You do not have to do this entirely alone, Daniel," she offered quietly.

"My corporate public relations team can draft a very polite, vague statement about mutually parting ways."

Daniel shook his head firmly, picking up the phone with a renewed sense of purpose.

"No, Mother."

"I made the grave mistake of bringing her into our lives, and I will be the one to clean it up."

"I will call the wedding planner first and instruct her to cancel all the vendor contracts immediately."

Eleanor smiled softly, deeply impressed by his unwavering accountability.

"You will likely lose all the massive financial deposits," Eleanor reminded him gently.

"A few lost deposits are a very small price to pay for my permanent freedom," Daniel replied without a moment of hesitation.

He unlocked his phone and quickly scrolled through his long list of contacts.

"I will also contact the charity board and ask them to reallocate the massive floral budget to the local children's hospital."

"There is absolutely no reason for thousands of beautiful flowers to go to waste just because a wedding was canceled."

Eleanor nodded in strong agreement, her heart swelling with absolute pride.

This was the compassionate, highly intelligent man she had raised.

He was not crumbling under the immense weight of a public embarrassment.

He was actively turning a disastrous, painful situation into something genuinely positive for others.

"That is an absolutely brilliant idea, Daniel," Eleanor praised him warmly.

Daniel dialed the first number and held the phone to his ear.

"It is time to clear out the toxic waste and completely start over," he said, waiting for the connection.

The line connected, and Daniel straightened his posture, slipping effortlessly into his commanding professional demeanor.

"Yes, Sarah, this is Daniel Vance."
