Chapter 1 - The Golden Facade

The crystal chandeliers of the sprawling estate glowed brightly against the evening sky.

Julian adjusted his black tuxedo, feeling an overwhelming swell of pride.

Tonight was the formal dinner party to celebrate his upcoming wedding.

More importantly, it was meant to celebrate the impending arrival of his first child.

His fiancée, Clara, stood elegantly beside him in a stunning gold halter dress.

Her left hand rested gently and protectively over her noticeably swollen belly.

Wealthy guests mingled around them, offering warm congratulations and admiring her maternal glow.

Across the grand room, little Lily sat quietly at the long dining table.

She wore a crisp white lace dress, her blonde hair perfectly styled in a braided updo.

Lily was only six years old, but her bright hazel eyes missed absolutely nothing.

Her mother, Sarah, was Julian’s older sister and a fiercely observant woman.

Sarah was currently delayed in the kitchen, finalizing details with the catering staff.

Hovering near the engaged couple was Brenda, Clara's closest confidante.

Brenda wore a striking red dress and seemed unusually tense for such a joyous occasion.

She constantly adjusted the fabric of Clara's dress and cast nervous glances around the room.

Julian smiled down at Clara with pure adoration.

"Are you feeling alright, my love?" he asked softly.

"Just a little tired," Clara sighed dramatically, leaning into his shoulder.

"The baby has been kicking all afternoon."

Julian beamed, proudly placing his hand over hers on her stomach.

Lily watched this entire exchange from her oversized dining chair.

She simply tilted her head, her young face an unreadable, innocent mask.

Earlier that afternoon, Lily had been exploring the quiet guest rooms upstairs.

She loved admiring the beautiful antique furniture in her uncle's massive house.

That was exactly when she had seen Clara standing in front of an open closet door.

Lily had frozen in the hallway, watching silently through the crack in the door.

Now, as the rich aroma of roasted dinner filled the air, the guests finally took their seats.

The long table was exquisitely adorned with silver platters, crystal glasses, and tall white candles.

Julian stood up at the head of the table and tapped his glass with a silver spoon.

The cheerful chatter in the room instantly fell completely silent.

"Thank you all for being here with us tonight," Julian began, his voice thick with emotion.

"This past year has truly been the happiest time of my entire life."

"I cannot wait to marry Clara."

"And I cannot wait to meet our beautiful child."

A warm, enthusiastic round of applause echoed through the elegant dining room.

Clara delicately dabbed at her dry eyes with a monogrammed silk napkin.

Brenda clapped the loudest, glaring defensively at anyone who wasn't paying full attention.

Lily did not clap.

She just stared fixedly at Clara's golden stomach.

She distinctly remembered the exact shape of the large throw pillow from the upstairs guest bed.

It was covered in intricate, embroidered floral patterns.

She remembered the thick, black velcro straps that Clara had wrapped around her own waist.

Julian sat back down, completely oblivious to the devastating storm brewing in his home.

The uniformed servers quietly began pouring expensive champagne and sparkling cider.

Lily took a very small, polite sip of her apple cider.

She looked over toward the doorway as her mother, Sarah, finally joined the dinner table.

Sarah caught her young daughter's eye and offered a gentle, knowing smile.

The first course was served with flawless precision.

Polite conversation buzzed softly around the luxurious room.

Clara laughed loudly at a guest's joke, leaning back in her upholstered chair.

The shimmering fabric of her gold dress pulled tightly across her midsection.

Lily calmly set her crystal glass down on the white tablecloth.

May you like

She raised her small hand and pointed her finger directly at Clara.

The illusion was about to shatter.
