Chapter 2 - The Floral Pillow

The heavy crystal chandeliers suddenly seemed to shine a little too bright. The quiet hum of polite conversation ground to a complete and sudden halt.
Everyone at the long dining table turned their attention to the six-year-old girl. Lily kept her small finger pointed squarely at her future aunt.
Her voice was soft, but it carried perfectly across the silent room. "That beautiful woman's belly is a pillow." A collective gasp rippled through the wealthy guests.
Clara’s face lost all its color in a single instant. She inhaled sharply, clutching her golden dress tightly over her stomach. Her dramatic gasp echoed like a gunshot in the tense silence. Julian blinked, his handsome face twisting in absolute confusion.
He looked from his visibly shaking fiancée to his calm little niece. He offered Lily a nervous, patronizing smile, assuming it was a childish game. "Which pillow is it, darling?" Julian asked gently. Lily did not lower her hand or break eye contact with Clara.
She spoke with the unwavering conviction that only a young child possesses. "I saw her put it on in the closet." "There are flowers on it."
The silence in the dining room became incredibly suffocating. Clara’s mouth opened and closed, but absolutely no words came out.
She looked frantically toward her best friend for help. Brenda immediately sprang into action, her red dress swishing aggressively. She leaned forward heavily against the expensive mahogany table. Her face was flushed dark red with sudden, defensive anger.
"She's just a child!" Brenda shouted loudly. "She doesn't know what she's talking about!" Julian frowned, clearly taken aback by Brenda's fierce outburst.
"Brenda, please lower your voice," Julian commanded softly but firmly.
"Lily is just a little girl making a silly observation." But Julian’s confident facade was beginning to crack.
He glanced down at Clara’s stomach, a tiny seed of doubt taking root in his mind.
Lily remained entirely unfazed by the shouting woman in red.
She slowly turned her head and looked down the table toward the doorway. "Mom..." Lily called out innocently. Sarah stepped fully into the dining room, her expression remarkably calm.
She walked slowly until she stood directly behind her daughter’s chair. Sarah placed her hands gently on Lily’s small shoulders. "Is there a problem here, Brenda?" Sarah asked coldly. Brenda stammered, pointing a shaking finger at the little girl.
"Your daughter is spreading malicious lies about Clara's pregnancy!" Sarah did not raise her voice, but her tone was absolute ice.
"My daughter does not lie." "She is incredibly observant, and she knows exactly what she saw." Julian stood up slowly, tossing his silk napkin onto the table.
"Sarah, this is going entirely too far," Julian warned his sister.
"Clara is carrying your future nephew."
Sarah looked her brother directly in the eyes with deep pity.
"Julian, I love you dearly, but you are being incredibly blind."
Clara suddenly burst into loud, theatrical tears, burying her face in her hands.
"How can you all attack me like this?" Clara sobbed heavily. "
I am carrying a child, and the stress is terribly bad for the baby!"
Julian immediately knelt beside her chair, wrapping his arms around her shaking shoulders.
He glared fiercely up at his sister and his niece.
"I want you both to leave my house immediately," Julian ordered. Lily looked up at her mother with big, worried hazel eyes.
Sarah just smiled reassuringly down at her brave little girl.

"We will gladly leave, Julian," Sarah said calmly. "
But before we do, I think you should ask Clara to stand up." The tension in the grand dining room reached a terrifying peak.
