Chapter 3: The Truth They Missed

“I gave you everything,” Brendan said hoarsely, looking at me like he was seeing a stranger.
“No,” I replied. “You gave me nothing.”
Memories flashed behind his eyes.
Every dinner he ignored.
Every insult he allowed.
Every moment he chose silence.
“You humiliated me,” I continued softly. “In front of your family. In front of your mistress.”
Jessica flinched.
“And today,” I glanced at Diane, “you poured dirty water over your employer.”
Diane’s face turned gray.
“You didn’t know,” she whispered.
“I didn’t hide who I was,” I said. “You just never thought I could be someone worth seeing.”
Arthur stepped forward again. “Additionally, evidence of financial misconduct has been forwarded to authorities.”
Brendan’s head snapped up. “What misconduct?”
Arthur’s expression didn’t change.

Brendan’s silence said everything.
