Chapter 1: The Second Lunch

The courtyard slowly came back to life after the moment passed.
Students kept walking.
Cars kept leaving.
But something had shiftedâquietly, almost invisibly.
The boy stood there, still clutching the slightly dirt-smudged sandwich against his chest like it might disappear if he loosened his grip.
The teacher didnât move right away. She studied himânot with pity, but with recognition. Like sheâd seen this kind of silence before.
The rich kid hesitated longer than he expected to.
His hand was still inside his backpack.
He wasnât used to this feelingâthe pause, the uncertainty. Usually, things were simple. You bumped into someone, you moved on.
But this⊠lingered.
He pulled out a neatly packed lunch. Branded wrapping. Clean. Perfect.
He looked at it.
Then at the boyâs sandwich.
Then, without making a scene, he stepped forward and held it outânot fully, not confidently. Just⊠halfway.
âHere,â he said, quieter this time. âYou can have mine.â
The poor boy didnât take it.
Not immediately.
His eyes flickered upâjust for a secondâthen back down to his own sandwich.
âIâm okay,â he whispered.
It wasnât pride.
It wasnât rejection.
It was something deeperâsomething like fear of losing even what little he had.
The teacher finally stepped closer.
âYou donât have to choose,â she said gently. âYou can have both.â
The boy looked confused.
The rich kid slowly lowered his handâbut didnât pull it back.
After a long momentâŠ
The boy reached out.
And took the second sandwich.
May you like
Carefully.
Like it mattered.
