Chapter 1: The Second Lunch

The courtyard slowly came back to life after the moment passed.

Students kept walking.

Cars kept leaving.

But something had shifted—quietly, almost invisibly.

The boy stood there, still clutching the slightly dirt-smudged sandwich against his chest like it might disappear if he loosened his grip.

The teacher didn’t move right away. She studied him—not with pity, but with recognition. Like she’d seen this kind of silence before.

The rich kid hesitated longer than he expected to.

His hand was still inside his backpack.

He wasn’t used to this feeling—the pause, the uncertainty. Usually, things were simple. You bumped into someone, you moved on.

But this
 lingered.

He pulled out a neatly packed lunch. Branded wrapping. Clean. Perfect.

He looked at it.

Then at the boy’s sandwich.

Then, without making a scene, he stepped forward and held it out—not fully, not confidently. Just
 halfway.

“Here,” he said, quieter this time. “You can have mine.”

The poor boy didn’t take it.

Not immediately.

His eyes flickered up—just for a second—then back down to his own sandwich.

“I’m okay,” he whispered.

It wasn’t pride.

It wasn’t rejection.

It was something deeper—something like fear of losing even what little he had.

The teacher finally stepped closer.

“You don’t have to choose,” she said gently. “You can have both.”

The boy looked confused.

The rich kid slowly lowered his hand—but didn’t pull it back.

After a long moment

The boy reached out.

And took the second sandwich.

May you like

Carefully.

Like it mattered.
