Chapter 1: The Man Behind the Glass

The restaurant fell into a suffocating silence.

Every head turned toward the trembling girl outside, her small figure barely visible through the sheets of rain. But all eyes quickly shifted to the man she had pointed at.

Ethan Cole.

He stood frozen beside his table, a glass of untouched wine in his hand. His perfectly composed demeanor shattered in an instant. The color drained from his face as the child’s words echoed in his mind.

"You didn’t want me to know."

“That’s ridiculous,” a woman’s voice snapped sharply. Vanessa Hale—elegant, poised, and dressed in a pristine white blazer—rose from her chair. Her voice carried authority, but her trembling hands betrayed her. “She’s just a child. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

But Ethan wasn’t listening to Vanessa.

His eyes were locked on the girl.

Something about her—the shape of her eyes, the curve of her lips—felt hauntingly familiar. A memory, buried deep beneath years of ambition and carefully constructed lies, began clawing its way back to the surface.

Without another word, Ethan turned and walked toward the glass doors.

“Ethan!” Vanessa called after him, panic slipping into her voice. “Don’t—”

But he was already gone.

The doors swung open, and the storm rushed in.

The little girl flinched as Ethan approached. Up close, she looked even smaller—soaked, shaking, clutching her teddy bear like it was the only thing keeping her together.

“Hey…” Ethan’s voice softened, uncertain. “What’s your name?”

The girl hesitated, her lips trembling.

“Lily,” she whispered.

The name hit him like lightning.

Lily.

A name he had once whispered with love… years ago.

His heart pounded. “Where’s your mom?”

Lily pointed weakly toward the street. “She… she went away… she said I wasn’t supposed to come here…”

Ethan knelt down, ignoring the rain soaking his suit. “And who told you about me?”

Lily sniffled, tears mixing with rain. “A lady… she said Mommy got paid… to keep me a secret…”

Behind them, inside the restaurant, Vanessa’s face had gone ghostly pale.

Because she knew exactly which “lady” Lily was talking about.

And for the first time, the truth she buried so carefully was slipping beyond her control.
