Chapter 2: Truth in the Storm

Ethan didn’t hesitate this time.

He took off his coat and gently wrapped it around Lily’s tiny shoulders. “You’re freezing,” he murmured, lifting her into his arms. She clung to him instinctively, her small fingers gripping his shirt.

And in that moment… something inside him broke open.

A feeling he couldn’t explain.

Or deny.

Inside, the restaurant buzzed with whispers as Ethan carried Lily through the doors. Water dripped onto the polished floor, but no one dared complain.

Vanessa stepped forward, forcing a tight smile. “Ethan, this is getting out of hand. Let’s call someone—”

“Did you do it?”

His voice cut through the room like a blade.

Vanessa froze.

Ethan’s eyes burned with something she had never seen before—anger, yes, but deeper than that… betrayal.

“Did you pay someone to keep a child away from me?”

Silence.

Vanessa’s composure cracked. “I was protecting you,” she said, her voice shaking. “You were building your career. A scandal—an illegitimate child—it would’ve destroyed everything.”

Ethan let out a hollow laugh. “Destroyed everything?” He looked down at Lily, who was now resting her head against his chest. “Or exposed the truth you didn’t want me to see?”

Tears welled in Vanessa’s eyes. “You don’t understand—”

“No,” Ethan said firmly. “You don’t understand.”

He turned to the manager. “Call an ambulance. And find this girl’s mother.”

Hours later, in a quiet hospital room, the pieces finally came together.

Lily’s mother, Sarah, was found.

Weak. Exhausted. But alive.

When she saw Ethan, tears streamed down her face. “I never wanted to keep her from you,” she whispered. “They… they paid me. I had no choice. I was alone. I thought… I thought you’d hate us.”

Ethan shook his head slowly, emotion choking his voice. “I lost years… years I could’ve had with her.”

Lily stirred in the bed, her small hand reaching out.

Ethan took it without hesitation.

And this time… he didn’t let go.
