Chapter 12 - The Recording.

The next surprise came from the security system.

The house had exterior cameras, but Claire rarely checked them unless a package went missing.

After Nora mentioned the notary visit, Ethan searched the archived footage.

The system stored only thirty days.

They were fortunate.

Twenty-one days earlier, Paul Renner’s car appeared in the driveway at 10:14 a.m.

He entered carrying a black case.

Forty-seven minutes later, he left.

That confirmed Nora’s memory.

But another clip mattered more.

Two nights before the saucepan incident, Vivian entered the home office at 1:07 a.m.

The interior hallway camera did not show what she did inside.

It did show her leaving twelve minutes later with the green folder.

Claire stared at the screen.

“That folder was in the printer tray the next morning.”

Ethan nodded.

Vivian must have taken it to review the documents, then returned it carelessly.

That was how Claire found it.

Vivian had accidentally exposed her own plan.

The next morning, another clip showed Vivian entering Claire’s bedroom while Claire was in the shower.

She emerged less than a minute later.

That was likely when she discovered the nightstand drawer was locked.

Then came the morning of the confrontation.

The hallway camera had no audio from inside the bedroom, but it showed enough.

Vivian entered with the saucepan.

Ethan followed several seconds later.

Forty-two seconds after that, Vivian stormed out touching her cheek.

Claire followed carrying the green folder.

No mystery remained about the sequence.

Still, Claire felt no satisfaction watching it.

She saw herself frightened and furious.

She saw Ethan hesitating in the doorway.

She saw a family that had allowed resentment to build until one morning turned into a rupture.

Ethan paused the video.

“I should have stopped her before she reached the bed.”

Claire did not soften the truth.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

That mattered more than another excuse.

Later that afternoon, Martin called with the preliminary review of VHM Consulting.

Vivian had indeed loaned money to Harper & Lane after Thomas died.

Some repayment was legitimate.

But the proposed ninety-five-thousand-dollar payment exceeded the documented balance by more than forty thousand.

Lewis had flagged the discrepancy twice.

Vivian had overridden him.

The picture was becoming clearer.

Vivian had not simply tried to save the company.

She had mixed personal fear, family legacy, business survival, and her own financial interests until she no longer treated the lines between them as real.

Then Ethan received a text.

It was from his mother.

COME TO THE HOUSE ALONE.

He showed Claire.

Claire frowned.

“She means her condo?”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

A second text arrived.

THE OLD HOUSE.

Hannah called immediately when they forwarded it to her.

“The one in Concord?”

Ethan looked at Claire.

Thomas and Vivian had lived in a smaller colonial house before building their company and moving into the city.

It had been empty for years.

Claire asked the obvious question.

“Why would she want you there?”

Ethan’s phone buzzed again.

This time the message included a photograph.

On an old wooden table sat the missing 2021 binder.

Beside it was Claire’s anniversary card.

And beneath both was a sealed envelope marked ORIGINALS.
