Chapter 7 - The Quiet Witness.

Claire called Martin before anyone chased after Vivian.
He told them to photograph every remaining document in the study and make a written inventory immediately.
“Do not turn this into a race through town,” he said.
“You have evidence.”
“Protect it.”
Ethan disliked waiting, but Claire knew Martin was right.
They scanned Thomas’s letter, the trust documents, the appraisal, and the signature cards.
Hannah photographed the filing cabinet and the empty space where the 2021 binder had been.
Then the housekeeper arrived.
Nora Alvarez had worked for the Harper family for nearly twelve years.
She came twice a week, spoke softly, noticed everything, and normally avoided family arguments with professional precision.
That morning, however, she entered the kitchen and immediately sensed something was different.
“Where is Mrs. Harper?” she asked.
Ethan looked up from the counter.
“Did she say anything to you yesterday?”
Nora’s eyes moved toward Claire.
Then toward Hannah.
“I think I should go.”
Claire stepped aside so the doorway remained open.
“You can leave whenever you want.”
Nora looked relieved by the choice.
Then she surprised them.
“But there is something you should know.”
She placed her bag on a chair.
Three weeks earlier, Nora had arrived early and found Vivian in Thomas’s study with an older man.
The man carried a portable document scanner and a notary case.
Paul Renner.
Nora had not known his name then.
She only remembered Vivian becoming angry when she appeared in the doorway.
“She told me Mr. Ethan had asked her to prepare company records.”
Ethan shook his head.
“I didn’t.”
Nora nodded slowly.
“I understand that now.”
She also remembered something else.
Vivian had asked her to retrieve Claire’s mail several times while Claire was traveling for a photography assignment.
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“What kind of mail?”
“I don’t know.”
Nora looked embarrassed.
“She told me there was a bank letter that could upset you before your trip.”
Claire had never received any bank letter.
Ethan rubbed both hands over his face.
The scale of the interference was expanding again.
Hannah asked whether Vivian had any keys to their private rooms.
Nora hesitated.
“She had copies made.”
Claire’s voice went quiet.
“Copies of what?”
“The bedroom.”
“The home office.”
“The mailbox key.”
Ethan’s head snapped up.
“When?”
“About two months ago.”
Nora quickly added that Vivian claimed the copies were for emergencies.
Claire thought about the green folder hidden beneath the mirrored nightstand.
Someone had opened the drawer before the morning confrontation.
Maybe Vivian had known Claire found the documents.
Maybe the saucepan was not random at all.
Maybe she had entered the room because she wanted the folder back before Claire could read it.
Claire asked Nora one last question.
“Did she ever go through that nightstand?”
Nora’s expression changed.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Yesterday morning.”
Claire felt a chill despite the warm kitchen.
“Before she woke me?”
Nora nodded.
“She came downstairs upset because the drawer was locked.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
Claire had locked it the night before after finding the folder in the home office printer tray.
That explained the timing.
Vivian had not exploded because Claire slept late.
She had exploded because she could not reach the documents.
Nora reached into her bag.
“There is one more thing.”
She pulled out a small white envelope.
“I found this under the copier in the study last week.”
Inside was a handwritten list of names.
Claire.
Ethan.
Hannah.
Martin Hale.
Paul Renner.
Beside each name was a date.
