Chapter 8 - The Second Set of Keys.
The phrase REMOVE ACCESS bothered Claire more than the forged signature.
A false signature had a clear purpose.
Removing access could mean almost anything.
She studied the note while Ethan called a locksmith.
By noon, every exterior lock in the house had been changed.
The bedroom, office, and mailbox locks were changed too.
Ethan collected every old key and placed them in a sealed bag for Martin.
For the first time since Vivian moved in, Claire heard the front door lock and felt that the sound belonged to her.
It should have been comforting.
Instead, her phone rang.
The caller ID showed Vivian.
Claire answered on speaker with Ethan and Hannah beside her.
Vivian did not sound angry.
She sounded wounded.
“I cannot believe you changed the locks.”
Ethan replied before Claire could.
“You left with the binder.”
“I took my husband’s records.”
“They are trust records belonging to Hannah and me.”
Vivian sighed.
“I am trying to keep this family from destroying itself.”
Claire looked at the note on the counter.
“What does remove access mean?”
Silence.
Then Vivian said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Claire read the list aloud.
When she reached Paul Renner’s name, Vivian interrupted.
“That paper proves nothing.”
“Then explain it.”
“I don’t answer to you.”
Claire almost smiled.
That sentence had once worked.
It no longer did.
Ethan leaned toward the phone.
“You do when you use our property.”
Vivian’s voice softened immediately.
“Ethan, sweetheart, you are tired.”
Claire watched him close his eyes.
There it was again.
The old rhythm.
Pressure, then tenderness.
Control disguised as concern.
But Ethan opened his eyes and stayed firm.
“Bring the binder to Martin’s office by three.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
Another pause.
“Because it isn’t with me.”
Hannah stepped closer.
“Where is it?”
“I gave it to the accountant.”
“What accountant?”
Vivian ended the call.
Martin immediately contacted Harper & Lane’s outside accounting firm.
They denied receiving any binder.
The family company’s internal accountant, Lewis Grant, did not answer his phone.
Then Claire received an email from the bank.
Her online access to the joint property loan portal had been temporarily suspended after three failed password-reset attempts.
The attempts had occurred that morning.
She showed Ethan.
His expression hardened.
“Remove access.”
Claire nodded.
The note was not theoretical.
Someone had been trying to shut them out of the process.
Martin told them to call the bank’s fraud team immediately.
While Ethan did that, Hannah searched the study computer.
Most files were password protected.
One folder was not.
It was labeled TRANSITION PLAN.
Inside were scanned copies of the property forms, company balance sheets, and a spreadsheet listing emergency funding sources.
Their home appeared first.
The Vermont lake house appeared second.
The Boston showroom appeared third.
A fourth line appeared beneath them.
CLAIRE HARPER TRUST DISTRIBUTION - EST. AVAILABLE $275,000.
Claire stared at the screen.
Her personal inheritance was not part of any family company.
Only Ethan knew the approximate balance.
She slowly turned toward him.
Ethan looked as shocked as she felt.
“I never told her that number.”
Claire wanted to believe him.

The spreadsheet had been created on Ethan’s laptop.
