Chapter 1: An Unexpected Reunion at the Pharmacy
The bright fluorescent lights of the pharmacy buzzed softly overhead.
Clara stood rigidly at the checkout counter.
Her pale hands trembled as she opened her thin wallet.
She counted the small stack of crumpled bills again.
It was not enough to cover the cost.
The pharmacist waited patiently but offered no solutions.
"Can I pay the rest on Friday?"
Clara asked with a desperate tone.
Her voice cracked under the immense weight of her exhaustion.
The pharmacist slowly shook his head in refusal.
Tears instantly welled up in Clara's tired eyes.
She covered her face with her hands.

"Mommy, don't cry."

She wanted to crouch down and hold her tight.
Suddenly, heavy and confident footsteps stopped directly behind them.
"I'll pay for the medicine."
A deep, commanding voice echoed in the quiet aisle.

She recognized that voice immediately.
She turned around slowly in absolute shock.
A tall man in a sharp dark blue suit stood there.
His dark wavy hair framed a serious, familiar face.
His intense eyes were fixed entirely on her.
"Max..."
Clara gasped softly through her tears.
She could not believe he was actually standing in front of her.
Max stepped closer to the counter.
His gaze shifted downward to the little girl.
He gently placed a protective hand on Lily's small shoulder.
Lily looked up at the tall, imposing stranger.
"Who are you?"
Lily asked with wide, curious eyes.
Max did not answer her right away.
He stared at the little girl with a look of overwhelming realization.
