Chapter 4: The Cold Reality

Max unlocked the car doors with a heavy click.

He immediately stepped out into the freezing rain.

He grabbed a large black umbrella from the backseat and opened it instantly.

Clara scrambled to get out before he could open her door.

She held Lily tightly against her chest to shield her from the brutal storm.

Max was already there, holding the umbrella securely over them both.

"I can walk us to the door, Max."

Clara said, her voice shaking violently from the cold.

Max ignored her protest completely.

He placed a firm, warm hand on her lower back.

He guided them carefully across the flooded street toward the building.

The entrance of the apartment complex smelled heavily of damp mold and old smoke.

A flickering overhead light illuminated the badly cracked tile floor.

Clara dug frantically through her small purse for her keys.

Her pale hands were shivering uncontrollably in the damp air.

Max watched her struggles with a dark, unreadable expression.

"Which floor, Clara?"

He asked quietly, observing the broken elevator sign taped to the wall.

"Third."

She whispered, finally pulling out a worn brass key.

Max nodded and gently gestured for her to lead the way up.

Clara desperately wanted to tell him to leave right now.

She wanted to scream that he did not belong in this miserable place.

But she was simply too emotionally and physically exhausted to fight his stubbornness.

They climbed the steep, dimly lit stairs in complete silence.

Lily rested her tired head heavily on Clara's shoulder.

When they reached unit 3B, Clara fumbled with the tricky deadbolt.

The wooden door creaked open to reveal a tiny, freezing apartment.

There was very little furniture inside the cramped living space.

A small, cheap space heater sat unplugged in the corner.

Max stepped over the threshold without waiting for an invitation.

His sharp eyes took in every single agonizing detail of her poverty.

"Is this where you have been living?"

His voice was dangerously low and filled with barely suppressed anger.
