Chapter 2: The Weight of the Past

Max did not take his eyes off the little girl.

He handed a sleek black credit card to the pharmacist.

The pharmacist quickly processed the transaction without a word.

Clara finally found her voice.

"You don't have to do this, Max."

She whispered nervously while wiping her tear-stained cheeks.

"I will pay you back."

Max turned his head slowly to look at her.

His expression was unreadable but his jaw was tense.

"Don't be ridiculous, Clara."

He replied softly but firmly.

The pharmacist handed the small white bag of medicine across the counter.

Max took it and handed it directly to Clara.

Their fingers brushed for a brief second.

Clara pulled her hand back as if she had been burned.

Lily watched the exchange with deep fascination.

"Are you my mommy's friend?"

The little girl asked innocently.

Max crouched down to be at eye level with her.

He noticed the familiar shape of her hazel eyes.

"Yes, sweetheart."

Max answered with a gentle smile that he rarely showed.

"I am an old friend of your mommy."

Clara felt a sharp pain in her chest.

She grabbed Lily's small hand gently but quickly.

"We need to go home, Lily."

Clara said while looking anxiously toward the exit.

"Thank you for the medicine, Max."

She tried to walk past him towards the sliding glass doors.

Max stood up quickly and blocked her path.

"It is pouring rain outside, Clara."

He stated while looking at her thin, worn cardigan.

"My car is right out front."

Clara shook her head rapidly.

"We can take the bus."

She argued defensively.

Max let out a heavy sigh of frustration.

"I am not letting you take a sick child on a bus in this weather."

He spoke with an authority that left no room for argument.

He gently guided them toward the exit.

Clara realized she had no energy left to fight him.

The automatic doors slid open to reveal a torrential downpour.

A sleek black luxury SUV idled right by the curb.

Max opened the rear door for them.

Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second before lifting Lily into the warm car.

She climbed in after her daughter and closed the door tightly.

Max walked around and got into the driver's seat.

The heavy rain battered loudly against the windshield.

Inside the car, a tense and suffocating silence settled between them.

Max looked through the rearview mirror.

His dark eyes locked onto Clara's terrified gaze.

He had spent five long years looking for her.

Now, he was never going to let her disappear again.
