Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Sent the Proof.
Nora expected the next revelation to make her angrier.
Instead, it made the whole situation stranger.
Killy's company was called KM Brand Ventures.
North Harbor had sent it twenty-eight thousand dollars two weeks before the honeymoon.
The payment description read strategic referral fee.
Nora had no idea whether the money represented legitimate work, a commission, or something else.
Dana reminded her not to assume.
"Connections are not conclusions."
Nora nodded.
"Then I want the conclusion."
The independent review firm requested documents from Ethan and North Harbor.
Ethan's attorney responded that the company should not turn a business review into harassment of third parties.
That phrase appeared in an email less than an hour after the board meeting.
Nora recognized the strategy.
If Ethan could make the process look personal, he could avoid answering why company money moved where it moved.
At three in the afternoon, Nora received another message from the unknown number.
"You found North Harbor."
She stared at the screen.
Only a handful of people knew that name.
Nora typed back.
"Who are you?"
This time, the answer came.
"Meet me in public. Tomorrow. 10 a.m. Hawthorne Hotel lobby."
Nora showed Dana.
Dana did not like anonymous meetings, even in hotel lobbies.
They agreed Dana would sit nearby and Nora would not go anywhere private.
The next morning, Nora arrived early.
At exactly ten, a young woman in a gray sweater entered the lobby carrying a laptop bag.
Nora recognized her after several seconds.
She had seen her once at Bennett Strategy Group's holiday party.
Her name was Rachel Dean.
She worked as an administrative coordinator at Mercer & Reed Creative.
Rachel sat across from Nora and looked terrified.
"I sent the messages."
Nora's first emotion was relief.
The second was suspicion.
"Why?"
Rachel opened her laptop but did not turn the screen yet.
"Because I thought you were being set up to look unreasonable while they moved on with a plan."
"Who is they?"
Rachel swallowed.
"Ethan and Killy."
Nora's fingers tightened around her coffee cup.
Rachel explained that Killy had become involved with Ethan several months earlier.
At first, Killy told coworkers Ethan was separated.
Then Rachel saw Nora and Ethan together at a company event and realized that was not true.
Killy later changed the story.
She began saying the marriage existed only on paper and Nora knew Ethan was leaving.
Rachel did not believe her.
"Why send me the marriage certificate?"
Rachel looked embarrassed.
"Killy had it."
Nora went still.
"Why did Killy have my marriage certificate?"
"I do not know."
Rachel turned the laptop.
She showed Nora a photograph taken in Killy's office.
On the desk sat a printed copy of the certificate, several resort pages, and a handwritten checklist.
Rachel had taken the photograph because the setup felt wrong.
Nora zoomed in on the checklist.
Most of the writing was too small to read.
One line was visible.
"N leaves airport - E confirms transfer."
Nora felt the room tilt.
Dana, seated ten feet away, saw Nora's face and immediately approached.
Rachel looked nervous but continued.
She had access to Killy's calendar for scheduling purposes.
She had seen meetings with Caleb Ross.
She had seen Ethan visit Killy's office after hours.
She had also seen a folder labeled North Harbor in Killy's cabinet.
Rachel had not opened it.
"I did not want to steal anything," she said quickly.
Dana nodded.
"Good. Do not access anything you are not authorized to access."
Rachel looked relieved.
"I only saved things I received or saw in the ordinary course of my work."
Dana asked her to preserve them.
Nora barely heard the next minute of conversation.
Her mind was fixed on the checklist.
N leaves airport.
E confirms transfer.
The plan had anticipated Nora leaving the airport.
That meant Ethan had not merely improvised after she canceled.
Someone had expected a separation at the terminal.
Nora looked at Rachel.
"Did Killy know I was supposed to be on that flight?"
Rachel hesitated.
"Yes."
"Then why did she wave at Ethan where I could see her?"
Rachel's face tightened.
"Because she wanted you to see."
Nora felt a slow chill.
"Why?"
Rachel looked toward Dana, then back at Nora.
"Killy said Ethan had promised you would make a scene."
"A scene?"
"She said if you got angry enough to leave, Ethan would have the whole flight to move the money and tell everyone you abandoned him."
Nora sat completely still.
The humiliation at the airport had not just been a careless affair exposed.
It might have been bait.
Rachel closed the laptop.
Rachel explained that she had worked near Killy for six months and had slowly become uncomfortable with the way Ethan's name appeared in conversations that had nothing to do with marketing.
At first, Rachel assumed Killy was exaggerating a romance to impress coworkers.
Then she saw travel confirmations printed beside internal billing notes.
The combination bothered her enough to save copies of emails she believed should have remained in the company record.
Rachel apologized for not speaking sooner.
Nora told her not to apologize for refusing to make an accusation before she understood what she had seen.
That answer surprised Rachel.
It surprised Nora too.
A week earlier, she might have wanted someone to blame for every missed warning.
Now she understood how confusing Ethan's separate stories had been by design.
He told Nora that Killy was a minor colleague.
He told Killy that Nora was emotionally unstable and nearly gone from the marriage.
He told employees that North Harbor was a routine vendor.
He told family that the airport problem came from jealousy.
Each audience received only the piece required to keep the larger picture hidden.
Rachel's printed itinerary was the first document suggesting that even the honeymoon itself had been divided into different versions.
"There is one more thing."
Nora almost did not want to ask.
"What?"
