Chapter 5 - The Accounts Go Quiet.

Nora spent the first night of her canceled honeymoon in the guest room of her own house.

She could not bring herself to sleep in the bedroom she had shared with Ethan.

Every object there seemed to have become evidence.

His watch charger.

The empty space where his travel bag had been.

The framed wedding photograph on the dresser.

She left the room untouched and carried a blanket downstairs.

Dana arrived before eight the next morning with coffee, a legal pad, and the kind of calm Nora needed.

"We are going to separate emotion from action," Dana said.

Nora sat at the kitchen island.

"I am not sure I can separate them."

"You do not have to. Your decisions do."

Dana reviewed the bank alerts, the unknown messages, and the resort reservation.

Then she asked Nora about the destination account added to the banking profile.

Nora had never seen the name.

Dana had received preliminary information from the bank's security team.

The destination institution was domestic, not overseas.

The account holder was a limited liability company called North Harbor Consulting.

Nora frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

Dana slid a page across the counter.

"It was formed four months ago."

"By Ethan?"

"We do not know yet."

Nora read the company name again.

North Harbor Consulting sounded intentionally boring.

That bothered her more than something dramatic would have.

Boring names were easy to overlook.

Dana continued.

"I also want to make sure you understand something. Protecting your personal and inherited assets is different from emptying shared accounts. We are not doing the second thing."

"I know."

"Good. Because if Ethan wants to tell people you stranded him and took everything, he may try."

Nora looked up.

"He will."

She knew him well enough to predict the shape of his defense.

He would avoid the center of the story and argue about the edges.

He would talk about her being controlling.

He would say she embarrassed him.

He would describe the bank restrictions as punishment rather than security.

He would make the conversation about her reaction because his actions were harder to defend.

Nora's phone buzzed.

It was Ethan's mother, Marjorie.

Nora let the call go to voicemail.

Thirty seconds later, a text arrived.

"Ethan says there has been a terrible misunderstanding. Please call me before this gets worse."

Nora handed the phone to Dana.

Dana read the message.

"Do you want to answer?"

"No."

"Then don't."

Another message appeared.

This one came from Ethan.

"You embarrassed me at the resort. Unlock the travel card."

Nora stared at it.

No apology.

No explanation.

No mention of Killy.

Just the card.

Dana watched her face.

"Do not respond while angry."

Nora placed the phone face down.

"I am not angry about the card."

"What are you angry about?"

Nora thought about it.

"That he still thinks the problem is inconvenience."

Dana nodded.

"That is useful information."

By noon, the bank confirmed that North Harbor Consulting had received two smaller transfers from Ethan's personal account during the previous month.

Those transfers were legal if the money was his.

The attempted transfer from the shared liquidity account was different because Nora's approval was required.

Dana requested records through the appropriate process.

Nora went to her home office and opened the financial folders she and Ethan rarely reviewed together.

She found invoices, travel receipts, vendor contracts, and months of ordinary paperwork.

Then she found three consulting invoices from North Harbor.

Each was billed to Bennett Strategy Group, the company Nora had inherited and Ethan helped manage.

Each invoice was just under the threshold that required Nora's direct approval.

The descriptions were vague.

Market expansion support.

Client development research.

Executive advisory services.

Nora felt her heartbeat change.

She called the company's controller, Melissa Grant.

"Did you approve payments to North Harbor?"

Melissa sounded confused.

"Ethan submitted them through operations. I thought you knew."

"I did not."

A pause.

"Nora, should I be worried?"

Nora chose her words carefully.

"Do not make any new payments to that vendor until we verify the contract."

"Understood."

"And preserve every related document."

Melissa's voice became quieter.

"There is something else."

Nora sat down.

"What?"

"Ethan asked me last week how quickly we could increase his signing authority while you were traveling."

The room seemed to narrow.

"What did you say?"

"That we needed your written approval."

"And?"

"He said he would get it."

Nora looked toward the printer beside her desk.

A sheet of paper was sitting in the output tray.

She had not printed anything.

She walked over and picked it up.

It was an authorization form for expanded executive access.

Her name was typed at the bottom.

Below it was a scanned signature that looked almost exactly like hers.

Almost.

Nora stared at the page.

Dana arrived carrying a portable scanner and asked Nora not to touch the suspicious authorization page more than necessary.

They photographed the printer tray, the surrounding papers, and the time displayed on the office system before moving anything.

Nora felt ridiculous documenting her own home office like a scene from someone else's life.

Then she noticed a faint gray code in the corner of the page.

It matched the numbering format used by Bennett Strategy Group's internal templates.

The discovery did not prove who created the document.

It did prove that whoever made it had access to more than a random signature image.

Dana called the company controller and asked her to preserve recent template downloads and print logs.

Nora listened without interrupting.

Her anger had changed shape overnight.

It was no longer hot enough to make her reckless.

It had become precise.

She walked upstairs afterward and removed the wedding photograph from the bedroom dresser.

She did not smash it or throw it away.

She placed it face down inside a drawer.

There would be time for grief later.

Right now, someone had expected her to be thousands of miles away while a document carrying her name entered the system.

Then she called Dana.

"You need to come back."

"What happened?"

May you like

Nora looked at the signature again.

"I think Ethan planned for me to be out of the country when this became active."
