Chapter 14 - The Last Confirmation.

Margaret was still in the hotel boardroom when the courier arrived at 11:31 a.m.
Security intercepted the package before she touched it.
Inside was a small white thermometer case.
The device looked ordinary enough to disappear in any nursery drawer.
Owen opened it under the camera.
“Do not enter anything yet,” she warned.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel may have configured the token to authorize, not cancel.”
“Is she right?”
“Daniel.”
“Is that code a cancellation?”
“If you enter it in the primary portal, it cancels.”
“If you enter it in the recovery portal, it authorizes.”
“I told Jennifer the truth.”
“You told her just enough truth to make her depend on you.”
“How do we identify the correct portal?”
“I found two web addresses embedded in Caroline's copied architecture.”
“One domain matches Daniel's current setup.”
“The other is a recovery mirror.”
“You won't know which is which.”
“You always add one layer too many.”
Owen opened Elaine's recordings.
Daniel's recorded voice instructed Elaine to print onboarding materials for a portal named LindenGate.
Jennifer remembered the name from a minor line item in North Birch's records.
At 11:47, the fraud unit established secure access to the primary portal.
Priya asked Jennifer to read the device code.
Jennifer did.
Everyone stared at Daniel.
“The code is time-based.”
“It should work.”
At 11:50, eight minutes remained before the institution's internal cutoff for blocking the noon sweep.
Jennifer felt the first edge of panic she had allowed herself all night.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“What did you change?”
Daniel's eyes moved toward Thomas's empty chair.
“Thomas changed the device.”
Owen grabbed the thermometer case and examined the back.
“This isn't Daniel's device.”
Margaret whispered, “Thomas sent a decoy.”
At 11:53, they found a shipping receipt.
Daniel stood.
“Where is she?”
Jennifer looked at him.
“Her friend's apartment.”
“Address?”
She gave it to security and investigators.
Daniel's panic returned, but this time it was focused entirely on Claire and Noah.
“Call her again.”
Jennifer did.
At 11:55, Claire answered.
“I was changing Noah.”
“Did a courier bring you a package?”
“Yes.”
“Do not open anything else.”
“I already opened it.”
Jennifer closed her eyes.
“What is inside?”
“A baby thermometer.”
“Claire, listen to me.”
“I need the six digits on the screen.”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“You lied to me about everything.”
“Claire, he is not asking for control.”
“We need the code to stop money from being moved into a trust created in Noah's name.”
Claire inhaled sharply.
“What?”
“I will explain everything.”
“Right now, please read the code.”
Claire read six digits.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Jennifer stared at him.
“You said one token.”
Daniel whispered, “There is a second factor.”
“Where?”
Daniel looked at Jennifer.
“With you.”
“I have nothing.”
“Yes, you do.”
He pointed toward the thick folder she had carried from the ballroom.
“The first page.”
Jennifer opened the folder.
The original bank statement with the highlighted transfers was still there.
Daniel said, “Look at the transaction references.”
The final four digits of three transfers formed twelve numbers.
At 11:58:41, the portal displayed TRANSFER CANCELED.
Then the fraud unit confirmed the underlying accounts had been flagged and frozen pending investigation.
“You sent me the first statement.”
Daniel did not deny it.
Jennifer's voice dropped.
“You started this entire confrontation.”
Daniel looked at the $4,500 invoice still tucked inside the folder.
“I needed someone to stop me.”
Richard stared at his son.

Daniel laughed once, broken and exhausted.
“I just couldn't be the one who admitted it first.”
