Chapter 5 - Room 1408.

Jennifer did not rush toward the elevators.

Daniel expected her to.

She could see it in the way his attention kept drifting toward the ballroom doors.

Instead, she closed the folder and stood.

“Richard, I need you to stay here.”

“You have no authority to search my hotel room.”

“The room is booked in the name of Hale Hospitality Events.”

“Cancel Daniel's access to 1408 and send the duty manager to the ballroom with a master key.”

“You can't do that.”

“I own this hotel.”

Five minutes later, Jennifer entered the elevator with Richard, the duty manager, and a security officer.

Daniel remained downstairs under security observation after trying twice to follow.

Margaret had chosen to stay with him.

Jennifer did not know whether that was loyalty, fear, or guilt.

Room 1408 sat at the end near a service stairwell.

Then Jennifer noticed three things that did not belong in an unused hotel room.

The security officer photographed everything before anyone touched it.

“Whose handwriting?”

“Daniel's.”

A luggage tag carried Owen Pike's name.

“Owen is here.”

She wondered if Owen had sent it.

They opened the aluminum case only after the security officer documented the seal.

Inside were photocopies of trust records, bank statements, corporate registrations, and blank signature pages.

Jennifer recognized her own signature on one sheet.

“This stationery was destroyed after our rebrand seven years ago.”

“Apparently not all of it.”

At the bottom of the case sat a flash drive taped beneath a divider.

Jennifer opened the drive with Richard watching.

2024.

2025.

2026.

Inside were spreadsheets with coded account names.

One folder was labeled CEREMONY.

The first pages concerned Noah Bennett Hale.

The next pages concerned a revocable family trust.

Then Jennifer found a document dated three days earlier.

It stated that Richard was voluntarily resigning as trustee of the Hale Family Legacy Trust due to declining health.

“I have never seen this.”

The next page appointed Daniel successor trustee.

The signature beneath Richard's name looked convincing.

A physician letter stated that Richard had experienced memory lapses affecting business judgment.

“My doctor never wrote that.”

Jennifer checked the signature.

But the contact number at the bottom was unfamiliar.

“He was going to remove me.”

“He was going to make it look voluntary.”

For all his severity, he had still believed Daniel's behavior came from entitlement and panic.

A folder labeled RICHARD contained photographs of him leaving a cardiology clinic, copies of his prescription refill dates, and notes about his travel schedule.

The entire christening had been designed as social proof for the final piece.

A room full of relatives seeing Richard embrace his grandson.

A family story that would make the trust amendment seem natural.

Jennifer whispered, “The party wasn't for Noah.”

“It was for witnesses.”

The security officer stepped toward the door.

Jennifer recognized her from old company Christmas photographs.

She looked past the security officer toward the open aluminum case.

“You found it.”

“Elaine, what did you do?”

“Less than Daniel wanted.”

“And more than I can live with.”

Jennifer approached her carefully.

“Did you send the email?”

Elaine shook her head.

“Owen.”

“He was in this room twenty minutes ago.”

“He didn't leave it.”

“He told me Daniel had ordered him to take everything and meet downstairs.”

Richard frowned.

“Then why is the bag here?”

Elaine stared at the open closet.

“Because that is not Owen's bag.”

Jennifer looked at the luggage tag again.

May you like

Elaine whispered the words that changed the entire direction of the night.

“Daniel uses Owen's name when he wants someone else blamed.”
