Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Envelope.

Jennifer did not open the email immediately.

Daniel was watching her phone too carefully.

That alone told her the message mattered.

She turned the screen facedown.

“Who sent you that?” Daniel asked.

“You seem worried.”

“I am worried about a stranger sending my wife threats.”

“It did not threaten me.”

“You don't know that.”

“Stop performing,” he said.

Claire shifted Noah against her shoulder and looked toward the ballroom exit.

“I want to leave.”

“You can.”

“No, she can't.”

“I am not asking you.”

Jennifer gestured to one of the security officers.

“Please have someone escort Ms. Bennett and her child to the lobby.”

“Noah stays with me.”

“Daniel, the child is with his mother.”

“He is my son.”

“Then act like his father by not using him as leverage in a room full of frightened people.”

Claire walked toward the ballroom doors with Noah.

“There is something you don't know.”

“Claire.”

“Daniel made me keep a storage key.”

“What kind of storage?”

“A private document vault near his office.”

“He told me it held copies of Noah's medical records and trust paperwork.”

“Do you still have the key?”

For the first time in Jennifer's memory, father and son faced each other without any pretense of affection.

“You will not intimidate her.”

“You have no idea what Jennifer is doing.”

“I know exactly what you did to my sister's property.”

Claire reached into her small evening purse.

She removed a brass key with a black plastic tag marked 317.

Daniel lunged one step.

Security moved instantly.

Claire placed the key beside Jennifer's folder.

“Whatever is in there, I never agreed to it.”

Daniel watched her leave with a hatred that made Jennifer's stomach tighten.

She had expected Daniel to be afraid of exposure.

Richard sat again.

“Open the email.”

Jennifer picked up her phone.

Jennifer understood JH immediately.

Richard understood RH.

Claire Bennett was likely CB.

Under Jennifer's initials were transfers totaling $640,000.

Under Richard's were entries totaling $1.8 million.

Under Claire's were liabilities totaling $480,000.

Ask Margaret who delivered the original Hale Legacy Reserve signature card.

Jennifer slowly turned toward her mother-in-law.

Margaret's face collapsed.

“Margaret?”

“I didn't know what it was for.”

“What signature card?”

“Two years ago, Daniel asked me to get a copy of Richard's old signature card from the family office.”

“You stole my banking signature?”

“I thought it was for a historical records audit.”

“Why would Daniel need it?”

“He said the bank had lost archived documentation and needed a comparison sample.”

“And you believed that?”

“I wanted to believe him.”

Margaret had seen warning signs and chosen comfort over questions.

“Mom, stop letting them twist this.”

“No.”

The amount was $200,000.

Jennifer's company had been saved with money taken from Caroline's settlement.

The money Jennifer had repaid had not gone back to the reserve.

According to the attached trail, it had gone to North Birch Holdings.

“So now you understand.”

“You used stolen family money to rescue my company, then redirected my repayments into your shell company.”

“I kept your company alive.”

“You made me repay money you had no right to lend me.”

“Where is vault 317?”

Jennifer examined the black tag more closely.

On the back, scratched almost invisibly into the plastic, were four numbers.

1408.

Richard stared at them.

“That isn't a vault code.”

Jennifer looked toward the hotel's elevator lobby beyond the ballroom doors.

May you like

Room 1408 was on the fourteenth floor.

And according to the event schedule Jennifer had seen earlier, Daniel had booked that room for the entire weekend.
