Chapter 10: The Reality Check

The radiator in the cramped, one-bedroom apartment in Bushwick hissed aggressively, spitting steam into the humid air.

Julian sat at a scratched laminate kitchen table, staring blankly at the screen of a cracked laptop he had bought at a pawn shop. His browser was filled with rejected job applications. For weeks, he had tried leveraging his former title as CEO of Vance Enterprises, only to be met with polite hang-ups or outright laughter. The corporate world of Manhattan was small, and word of his spectacular, humiliating downfall had spread like wildfire.

Across the tiny living room, Victoria sat on a threadbare sofa, mindlessly flipping through daytime television. The silence between them had become a suffocating weight.

Julian pulled up a crude digital spreadsheet he had made to track their survival. It was a bleak, terrifying picture.

He buried his face in his hands. He was thirty-two years old, and he was completely, utterly ruined.

A sharp, authoritative knock on the door made them both jump.

"Julian?" Victoria whispered, her eyes wide with paranoia. "Is it the landlord? Tell him we'll have the rent next week."

Julian stood up, his heart pounding in his chest. He walked to the door and peered through the peephole. His blood ran cold. Standing in the dingy hallway were two uniformed NYPD officers and a detective in a cheap suit, holding a manila folder.

He unlocked the deadbolt with a trembling hand, pulling the door open.

"Julian Vance?" the detective asked, his tone flat and heavily accented with a Brooklyn drawl.

"Yes," Julian croaked, his throat entirely dry.

"I'm Detective Miller, white-collar crimes division," the man said, flipping open his badge. "I have a warrant for your arrest, issued by the District Attorney's office. You're being charged with three counts of corporate embezzlement, two counts of wire fraud, and one count of money laundering."

"No," Victoria screamed, scrambling off the sofa. "No! My son is a Vance! You can't do this!"

"Ma'am, please step back," one of the uniformed officers warned, placing a hand on his utility belt.

The detective grabbed Julian’s arm, spinning him around and slamming him roughly against the peeling paint of the apartment wall. The cold steel of handcuffs snapped tightly around his wrists.

"Julian Vance, you have the right to remain silent," the detective recited lazily, guiding a paralyzed Julian out into the hallway. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As Julian was led down the stairs, the sound of his mother's hysterical sobbing echoing behind him, he realized Clara hadn't just taken his money. She had let him hang himself with his own rope.
