Chapter 3: The Awakening

The morning sun filtered through the sheer silk curtains of the master bedroom at the Vance estate. Julian awoke with a pounding headache, the remnants of expensive scotch and the adrenaline of the previous night’s confrontation still coursing through his veins.

He rolled over, expecting to feel the cold, satisfying emptiness of the bed. Instead, he felt his phone vibrating relentlessly on the nightstand.

He groaned, snatching it up. He had thirty-two missed calls. Half were from his mother, the rest were from the executive board of Vance Enterprises and his personal banker.

Frowning, he dialed his banker first.

"Arthur, what is going on?" Julian snapped, sitting up and rubbing his temples. "It’s seven in the morning."

"Mr. Vance," Arthur's voice was panicked, breathless. "Your cards. The accounts. They’re gone."

"What do you mean, gone? Did we get hacked?" Julian stood up, the fog of sleep vanishing instantly.

"Not hacked, sir. Liquidated and locked. The primary holding company—Aegis Trust—has enacted a complete freeze on all subsidiary assets."

Julian scoffed. "That’s impossible. I am the CEO of Aegis Trust. I didn't authorize a freeze."

"Sir..." Arthur hesitated, the silence stretching uncomfortably. "You aren't the CEO of Aegis Trust. You're a managing director. The sole proprietor and majority shareholder is a blind trust registered under Clara's maiden name. She triggered a hostile asset reclamation at 1:15 AM. Your corporate cards are declined. Your personal checking is overdrawn. Sir, even the deed to the estate..."

Julian stopped breathing. He looked around the massive, opulent bedroom. "What about the estate?"

"It’s owned by Aegis," Arthur whispered. "You are officially a tenant, Mr. Vance. And as of ten minutes ago, an eviction notice was filed."

The phone slipped from Julian’s hand, falling to the plush carpet with a soft thud. He rushed out of the bedroom, bursting into the hallway.

"Mother!" he shouted, sprinting toward the guest wing.

Before he could reach her door, Victoria emerged, clutching her iPad, her face ashen and terrified. She was wearing her silk robe, her hair in disarray.

"Julian," she gasped, her voice trembling. "My accounts... the charity fund... they're saying my platinum card was declined at the coffee shop this morning. What is happening?"

Julian leaned against the wall, the blood draining from his face as the memory of the previous night rushed back. He remembered Clara on the floor. He remembered her calm, terrifying eyes.

Remember every word you just said.

He had told her she came with nothing and would leave with nothing. He had told her she was a footnote.

Downstairs, the heavy sound of the front door opening echoed through the foyer, followed by the heavy footsteps of men in boots.

Julian rushed to the top of the marble staircase. In the foyer stood three men in dark suits, accompanied by two uniformed police officers. Standing in the center of them, flanked by her lawyer, was Clara.

She had changed into a sharp, tailored black pantsuit. Her hair was pulled back perfectly, and the bruise on her cheek was faintly visible, worn not as a mark of shame, but as a badge of war.

She looked up the staircase, locking eyes with her terrified husband and mother-in-law.

"Good morning, Julian," Clara said, her voice echoing perfectly in the home she owned. "Pack your things. You have exactly one hour to vacate my property."
