Chapter 4: The Eviction

Julian gripped the marble balustrade, his knuckles turning white. He stared down at Clara, his mind desperately trying to assemble the shattered pieces of his reality. The police officers stood stoically by the door, their presence a suffocating reminder of his sudden powerlessness.

"Clara, this is insane," Julian stammered, forcing a nervous, patronizing laugh as he descended the stairs. He tried to project the alpha-male confidence he usually weaponized in boardrooms. "You’re upset. I get it. Last night got out of hand. But you can't just forge a deed and bring the police into our home. This is a PR nightmare."

"My home, Julian," Clara corrected, her tone as smooth and unyielding as glass. She didn't flinch as he approached.

Beside her, Mr. Sterling, a silver-haired corporate litigator with a reputation for merciless precision, opened a sleek leather briefcase. He extracted a thick stack of documents and held them out.

"Mr. Vance," Sterling said, his voice completely devoid of warmth. "These are the original articles of incorporation for Aegis Trust, signed by you three years ago. If you recall, you transferred all primary holding assets to the trust to 'shield them from corporate liability.' What you failed to read in the fine print was that Clara Vance—under her maiden name, Clara Hayes—was named the irrevocable, sole beneficiary and executive director."

Julian felt the floor tilt beneath his feet. He remembered the mountain of paperwork Clara had organized during the company's restructuring. He had signed them blindly, too busy planning his next golf trip to read the clauses. He had assumed she was just playing the dutiful, grateful wife.

"You set me up," Julian whispered, the color draining entirely from his face.

"I protected my investments," Clara replied, her eyes dropping briefly to the floor where she had been thrown the night before, then rising to meet his gaze. "I spent three years pouring my inheritance into a dying company to save your family's legacy. You repaid me by funneling company funds to your assistant and publicly assaulting me. The setup was entirely your own doing."

"You little ungrateful—!" Victoria shrieked from the top of the stairs, her shock violently morphing into rage. She marched down, her silk robe billowing. "We gave you our name! You were a nobody before you married my son! I will sue you for every penny!"

"With what retainer, Victoria?" Clara asked quietly. "Your accounts are frozen. The jewelry you are currently wearing was purchased through an Aegis subsidiary. Leave it on the vanity upstairs."

Victoria stopped dead in her tracks, clutching the diamond necklace at her throat as if Clara were trying to physically rip it away.

"You have forty-five minutes left," one of the police officers interjected, tapping his watch. "I suggest you start packing a bag, folks. Personal items only."

Julian looked at Clara, searching for a trace of the woman who used to make his coffee, the woman who used to look at him with adoration. He found nothing but a fortress.

"You're really going to throw us out on the street?" Julian asked, his voice cracking, the arrogance finally shattering.

"I am showing you the exact amount of mercy you showed me last night," Clara said. She turned her back to him, signaling the end of the conversation. "Sterling, make sure they don't take the art."
