CHAPTER 1: THE THING UNDER THE SINK

Through the glass, Emily’s breath fogged the window.
Diane’s manicured hands shook as she yanked open the cabinet beneath the sink. The polished, untouchable woman who had spent years criticizing Emily for “posture” and “manners” was now on her knees, clawing through trash like a desperate animal.
“What is she doing…?” Emily whispered.
Inside, the room had shifted.
Mark stepped forward. “Mom, what the hell are you—”
“Shut up!” Diane snapped, her voice cracking for the first time in years.
She pulled out a small black pouch.
Robert’s eyes narrowed.
“Put that down,” he said calmly.
Diane froze. Slowly, she turned around, clutching the pouch to her chest like it was oxygen.
“It’s nothing,” she said quickly. “Just medication.”
Robert didn’t move. “Then you won’t mind opening it.”
Silence.
Mark scoffed. “This is ridiculous. You think we’re criminals now?”
Robert finally looked at him.
“I don’t think,” he said quietly. “I observe.”
Diane’s fingers trembled as she unzipped the pouch.
Inside—
A small voice recorder.
And a second item.
A vial.
Emily’s stomach dropped.
Robert stepped closer. “Play it.”
“No—” Diane whispered.
“Play it.”
With shaking hands, she pressed the button.
The room filled with Emily’s voice.
Crying.
Begging.
“Please, Mark… stop… I didn’t do anything—”
The recording cut to the sound of a slap.
Then laughter.
Mark’s laughter.
The room went dead silent.
Outside, Emily felt something inside her finally break free.
May you like
Not fear.
Truth.
