As officers moved in, Diane broke.

“It wasn’t supposed to go this far!” she screamed. “I was protecting my son!”

“By poisoning his wife?” Robert asked.

“She was going to leave him!” Diane cried. “Take everything!”

Emily blinked. “Everything?”

Robert slowly turned to Mark.

“What did you tell her?”

Mark said nothing.

Diane answered instead.

“That the house… the accounts… everything was in his name—”

Robert let out a quiet, humorless laugh.

Then he reached into his coat.

And pulled out a folder.

“No,” he said. “Everything is in hers.”

Silence detonated across the room.

Mark’s head snapped up. “What?”

Robert handed the papers to the nearest officer.

“My daughter owns the house,” he said. “The business. The trust fund.”

Emily stared at him. “Dad…?”

“I transferred everything before the wedding,” Robert said gently. “Just in case.”

Mark stumbled back like he’d been hit.

“You lied to me—”

“No,” Robert said. “You never asked.”
