Chapter 1: The Glass Balcony

The crystal chandeliers cast a heavy, warm glow over the sprawling ballroom.
Dozens of elite guests stood frozen in their expensive evening wear.
The string quartet had stopped playing entirely.
A collective gasp still hung in the stagnant, tense air of the banquet hall.
Clara stood trembling in the very center of the room.
Her light blue silk gown shimmered as she breathed in shallow, panicked gasps.
A burning red handprint slowly bloomed across her pale left cheek.
She could not bear to look at him.
Lucas stood only a few feet away.
His jaw was clenched tightly above his perfectly tailored black bowtie.
His eyes were dark, aggressive, and entirely devoid of remorse.
He took a slow, intimidating half-step forward.
Clara immediately stumbled backward in sheer terror.
Her matching silk shawl slipped precariously off her left shoulder.
She turned her back to the staring crowd.
She hurried toward the massive glass doors of the outdoor balcony.
The cool, neon-lit night air hit her face the moment she pushed through the heavy glass.
The glittering city skyline blurred heavily through her rising tears.
She leaned against the metal railing.
She was absolutely desperate for oxygen.
Inside the hall, anxious murmurs finally began to ripple through the wealthy crowd.
An older gentleman in a dark grey suit stepped squarely into Lucas’s path.
The older man raised both of his hands.
He pressed them firmly against Lucas’s chest to hold him back.
"Stand down, son," the older man warned sternly.
Lucas ignored the warning and glared over the man's shoulder.
He watched Clara intently through the large glass panes.
Out on the dark balcony, Clara’s hands shook uncontrollably.
She fumbled blindly beneath her silk shawl to retrieve her smartphone.
Her thumb slipped twice on the glass screen.
She struggled to unlock the device through her blurry, tear-filled vision.
She pressed the speed dial for the only person left in her life she truly trusted.
The phone rang once in her ear.
It rang twice.

"Hello?" a gruff, familiar voice finally answered.
Clara squeezed her eyes shut tightly.
A fresh wave of tears cascaded directly over her bruised cheek.
"Daddy..." she whispered.
Her voice cracked violently in the cold air.
She choked on her next breath.
"Lucas hit me."
Total silence fell over the cellular line for a terrifying second.
When her father spoke again, his tone was chillingly calm.
"I'm on my way."
Clara looked back through the glass doors at the tense standoff inside.
Lucas was still trying to aggressively push past the older guest.
"Don't move," her father commanded firmly over the phone.
The line went completely dead.
Clara lowered the phone to her chest.
She felt incredibly small against the sprawling, indifferent backdrop of the city.
The darkness of the expansive balcony suddenly felt isolating.
Without warning, a shadow shifted in her peripheral vision.
The heavy glass door clicked quietly to her left.
A tall, shadowy figure stepped out into the cool night air with her.
May you like
Clara froze completely.
Her heart began to pound violently in her chest.
