Chapter 8: The Legal Shield

The heavy mahogany doors of Arthur’s private study stood wide open.
Clara stepped inside hesitantly, holding her warm teacup tightly in both hands.
The room smelled richly of old books, polished wood, and freshly brewed coffee.
A tall, sharp-looking woman in a tailored navy suit stood up immediately from the leather sofa.
She extended a confident hand toward Clara with a warm, highly professional smile.
"Good morning, Clara, I am Victoria Sterling," the woman introduced herself smoothly.
"Your father has retained my firm to handle every single aspect of your divorce."
Clara shook Victoria’s hand, feeling a sudden surge of nervous energy in her stomach.
Arthur guided his daughter to a comfortable velvet armchair near the crackling fireplace.
"Victoria is an absolute shark in the courtroom, sweetheart," Arthur said proudly.
"Lucas will not be able to hide a single penny or manipulate a single fact."
Victoria sat back down, popping open a thick leather briefcase on the glass coffee table.
"First and foremost, I want you to know that you are completely safe now," Victoria stated clearly.
"The emergency restraining order was signed by a judge less than an hour ago."
Clara let out a deep, shaking breath she did not even realize she was holding.
"Does Lucas know yet?" Clara asked softly.
Victoria pulled out a neatly organized stack of pristine legal documents and laid them flat.
"He was served the papers directly in his holding cell this morning before making bail."
A tiny, almost imperceptible smile tugged at the corner of Clara's bruised mouth.
"However, we need to begin documenting the full history of his behavior," Victoria continued gently.
"Last night was the breaking point, but we need to establish the long-term pattern of his abuse."
Clara looked down at her hands, the familiar, heavy feeling of shame creeping back into her chest.
Arthur reached over and covered her shaking hands just like he had in the car.
"You do not have to protect his reputation anymore, Clara," Arthur reminded her gently.
Clara closed her eyes tightly and nodded her head slowly.
"It started small, just isolating me from my friends and constantly monitoring my phone," Clara began quietly.
Victoria wrote meticulously on her yellow legal pad without a single hint of judgment.
"Then it escalated to aggressive yelling, throwing things around the house, and finally, the physical violence."
Saying the terrible words out loud in the bright daylight felt like lifting a massive stone off her shoulders.
Victoria stopped writing and looked directly into Clara's eyes with fierce, unyielding determination.

"Thank you for your immense bravery in sharing this with me today," Victoria said sincerely.
"I promise you, we are going to legally dismantle his life exactly the way he tried to dismantle yours."
