Chapter 5: The Statement

Lucas was escorted out of the grand ballroom in absolute disgrace.
The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind him and the arresting officers.
A profound, heavy silence settled over the remaining wealthy guests.
Clara watched him disappear with a complicated mix of relief and sheer exhaustion.
Her legs finally gave out beneath her shaking, fragile frame.
Arthur caught her instantly and guided her toward a plush velvet chair.
Elena followed closely behind them with a fresh glass of cool water.
"Drink this slowly," Elena advised with a comforting, warm smile.
Clara took the glass with trembling hands and sipped the water gratefully.
The lead police officer approached them with his notepad drawn and ready.
His expression was remarkably gentle for a man in his tough profession.
"Take your time, ma'am," the officer said softly to her.
"I just need you to walk me through exactly what triggered the assault tonight."
Clara looked down at her battered reflection in the glass of water.
She took a deep, shuddering breath to steady her violently racing heart.
"He was angry because I spoke to a male colleague," Clara explained quietly.
"He accused me of deliberately embarrassing him in front of his important investors."
The officer wrote diligently in his small notebook without interrupting her testimony.
"Then he grabbed my arm and dragged me into the center of the room."
Clara closed her eyes as the humiliating memory washed over her once again.
"When I begged him to let go, he struck me across the face."
Arthur placed a large, reassuring hand directly on his daughter's trembling shoulder.
"You are doing incredibly well, Clara," Arthur murmured proudly.
The officer flipped his notebook shut and tucked his silver pen away.
"We have everything we need for now," the officer stated professionally.
"A detective will reach out to you tomorrow for a formal, recorded follow-up."
Arthur stood up tall and offered his hand to help Clara rise from the chair.
"We are leaving this awful place right now," Arthur declared firmly.
Clara nodded in agreement and handed the empty water glass back to Elena.
"I do not know how to ever repay you for your kindness tonight," Clara said sincerely.
Elena gently squeezed Clara's free hand in a powerful show of female solidarity.
"You owe me absolutely nothing," Elena replied gracefully.
"Just promise me you will never go back to that terrible monster."
Clara looked deeply into Elena's eyes and found a new, resilient strength there.
"I promise," Clara swore with absolute, unwavering conviction.
Arthur wrapped his warm charcoal overcoat tightly around his daughter once more.
They walked together toward the grand exit of the luxurious hotel venue.
The crowd of elites parted for them in respectful, hushed silence.

Clara kept her head held high despite the painful, burning throb in her cheek.
She was finally stepping out of the suffocating darkness and into a brand new life.
