Chapter 1 - The Ring and The Blow.

The first thing Evelyn Hart heard was the soft chime of the jewelry store door closing behind her.

The second thing she heard was her husband's voice laughing at something another woman had whispered into his ear.

Grant Hart stood beneath a chandelier of cold white light in a navy suit Evelyn had chosen for him two Christmases earlier.

Beside him stood a young blonde woman in a champagne silk dress, her arms folded as if she had every right to be there.

Between them, on a black velvet tray, rested a diamond ring larger than the one on Evelyn's own hand.

For three long seconds, nobody moved.

Grant's smile vanished first.

His face tightened with the ugly speed of a man who had been caught but still believed anger could make him innocent.

"What are you doing here?"

Evelyn did not answer.

She looked at the other woman, then at the ring, then back at her husband.

"Are you spying on me?!"

His shout turned the heads of two sales associates near the rear display cases.

Evelyn's fingers curled around the small receipt inside her coat pocket.

She had come to return her engagement ring, not to confront him.

That had been the plan before she saw him choosing another woman's future with money that belonged to their marriage.

"Grant, don't."

The warning came from the store manager, but it arrived one second too late.

Grant stepped forward and struck Evelyn across the face.

The slap cracked through the bright room like a snapped branch.

Her shoulder hit the edge of a display cabinet before she fell hard onto the polished tile.

For a moment, the ceiling lights blurred into white circles above her.

The other woman did not rush to help.

She simply stared, arms still crossed, her mouth slightly open.

Grant's chest rose and fell as if he were the injured one.

"You shouldn't have followed me."

Evelyn tasted blood where her teeth had cut the inside of her cheek.

She looked at the diamond on her left hand.

It had once seemed impossibly beautiful.

Now it looked like a small, expensive lie.

The shock inside her did not disappear.

It hardened.

Evelyn pushed herself to her feet without taking Grant's hand when he finally offered it.

She walked to the nearest glass counter while every person in the store watched her.

Then she removed the ring.

Grant's expression changed.

"What are you doing?"

Evelyn placed the ring on the glass with a quiet click.

"I came to return this."

The blonde woman finally lowered her arms.

Grant stared at the diamond as though Evelyn had placed a live grenade between them.

Evelyn turned toward him.

Her cheek burned, but her voice did not shake.

"My lawyer will demand a fifty-fifty split of the assets tomorrow."

Grant went pale.

The fury left his face so quickly that it exposed the fear underneath.

"Evelyn, wait."

She moved toward the exit.

Behind her came the scrape of expensive trousers against tile.

When she looked back, Grant Hart was on his knees.

"Wait, you can't."

Evelyn had never seen him beg before.

That frightened her more than the slap.

Outside, her phone vibrated before she reached the curb.

The message came from Naomi Reed, the attorney Evelyn had contacted that morning.

DO NOT GO HOME.

A second message appeared before Evelyn could call her.

HE MOVED THE MONEY TWO HOURS AGO.

Evelyn stared through the jewelry store window at her husband still kneeling beside the ring.

Then Naomi sent one final line.

AND HE USED YOUR SIGNATURE.
