Chapter 3 - Box 417.

The warning should have kept Evelyn away from the bank.

Instead, it convinced her that Grant was terrified of whatever waited inside box 417.

Naomi arranged for a private investigator named Marcus Bell to accompany them the next morning.

The bank branch stood on Madison Avenue behind stone columns and a bronze clock that made the building look older than the secrets it protected.

Evelyn kept her bruised cheek turned away from the lobby cameras.

At the vault desk, she placed the brass key in front of an assistant manager named Mr. Holcomb.

His polite smile vanished when he read the number.

"Mrs. Hart, I need to check something."

He disappeared through a frosted glass door.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

Naomi's patience thinned visibly.

"Why is this taking so long?"

Mr. Holcomb finally returned with another man wearing a security badge.

"Mrs. Hart, box 417 was accessed yesterday afternoon."

Evelyn stared at him.

"By whom?"

He hesitated.

"By you."

The lobby seemed to tilt.

"I was never here yesterday."

Mr. Holcomb slid a paper across the desk.

Evelyn's name appeared beside a signature that looked almost perfect.

Almost.

The loop in the E leaned the wrong way.

The final stroke in Hart was too long.

Someone had practiced.

"Do you have camera footage?"

Naomi asked.

The security officer stepped in.

"We retain it, but we cannot release it without legal process."

"Preserve it immediately."

Naomi's voice sharpened.

"This is potential evidence of identity fraud and dissipation of marital assets."

Mr. Holcomb nodded nervously.

Evelyn touched the edge of the access log.

"What was removed?"

"We don't inventory private boxes."

Marcus Bell had remained silent until then.

He pointed to a notation in the margin.

"What's that code?"

The manager frowned.

"Courier verification."

"Meaning?"

"The customer requested a bank courier after accessing the box."

Evelyn looked up.

"Where did the courier go?"

The manager refused to answer until Naomi threatened an emergency subpoena.

Then he gave them only one fact.

The package had been delivered to a private storage facility near the river.

Grant called while they were still in the bank.

Evelyn answered this time.

"Where are you?"

His voice sounded controlled, almost gentle.

"Why?"

"Because I want to fix this."

"You forged my signature."

There was a pause.

"You don't understand what you're looking at."

"Then explain box 417."

Grant stopped breathing on the other end.

The silence told Evelyn more than a confession could have.

"Evelyn, listen to me very carefully."

His voice dropped.

"Do not touch anything connected to that box."

"Why?"

"Because some things were set up before you and I ever met."

That answer made no sense.

She had been married to him for seven years.

"Who accessed the box yesterday?"

Grant did not answer.

Instead, he said something that turned her stomach.

"Ask your mother."

Evelyn's grip tightened on the phone.

"My mother has been dead for nine years."

Grant hung up.

Marcus was already searching the address of the storage facility on his tablet.

A moment later, he turned the screen toward Naomi and Evelyn.

The registered owner of the building was Meridian House Holdings.

The same company that had received eighteen million dollars the previous morning.

Then Naomi's phone rang.

She listened for less than twenty seconds before going completely still.

"The court granted the temporary freeze."

Evelyn exhaled.

Naomi did not look relieved.

"But we're too late on the eighteen million."

"Where did it go?"

Naomi turned the phone so Evelyn could see the transfer notice.
