Chapter 6 - The Missing Forty-Seven Seconds.

The emergency hearing began at nine the next morning.

Grant arrived through a side entrance surrounded by attorneys and public-relations staff.

He did not look at Evelyn until they entered the courtroom.

Then he gave her a wounded expression so convincing that a stranger might have mistaken him for the victim.

His attorney argued that the eighteen-million-dollar transfer had been authorized by Evelyn and later moved into an account carrying her name.

Naomi responded with device records, location evidence, and the bank's box 417 access log.

Grant's attorney called the accusations speculative.

Then he introduced photographs of Evelyn entering Naomi's office days before the jewelry-store confrontation.

"Mrs. Hart had already planned a financial attack on her husband."

Evelyn felt rage crawl up her throat.

Naomi stood.

"Seeking legal advice is not an attack."

The judge agreed, but Grant's team had achieved what Naomi warned they wanted.

Hesitation.

The judge extended the temporary asset freeze for seven days and ordered expedited forensic accounting.

It was a partial victory.

Then Grant's attorney asked to submit the jewelry-store security footage.

Evelyn nearly laughed.

The video showed Grant striking her.

Naomi had already requested it.

But when the footage played, the room went silent for a different reason.

The video began with Evelyn entering the store.

It showed Grant turning toward her.

Then the screen jumped.

Forty-seven seconds vanished.

The next frame showed Evelyn already on the floor.

Grant's attorney spread his hands.

"The available footage does not show who initiated physical contact."

Evelyn stared at the monitor.

"That's not the video."

The judge looked at her sharply.

Naomi touched Evelyn's arm.

"Your Honor, we have reason to believe this copy is incomplete."

The jewelry-store manager, Mr. Vale, had been subpoenaed and was waiting outside.

Under oath, he confirmed that the store maintained continuous recording from twelve cameras.

He also confirmed seeing Grant strike Evelyn.

Grant's attorney attacked his memory and suggested the scene had been chaotic.

Then Naomi asked the question that changed the room.

"Who exported this particular video file?"

Mr. Vale swallowed.

"Our security vendor."

"Name the vendor."

"Northstar Integrated Systems."

Marcus, sitting behind Naomi, immediately began typing.

Within minutes, he passed her a note.

Naomi read it once and asked for a brief recess.

In the hallway, she showed Evelyn the corporate registration.

Northstar Integrated Systems was owned by Meridian House Holdings.

The same shell company that had received the eighteen million dollars.

"Grant owns the company that controls the store's security system?"

"Not directly."

Marcus enlarged the ownership tree.

"Meridian owns Northstar through two subsidiaries."

Celeste, who had come voluntarily, leaned over his shoulder.

"Grant told me Meridian was a real-estate holding company."

Evelyn looked through the courtroom doors at her husband.

He was laughing quietly with one of his lawyers.

"He knew the cameras could be altered."

Naomi's expression hardened.

"Or he chose that store because he knew."

The implication made Evelyn's skin go cold.

Grant had not simply been caught at a jewelry store.

He may have expected her to arrive.

The confrontation could have been part of the plan.

When court resumed, Naomi requested preservation of the original surveillance drives and an independent forensic examination.

The judge granted it.

Grant finally looked worried.

Outside the courthouse, reporters gathered behind barricades because Hartwell's press release had gone public that morning despite Naomi's cease-and-desist demand.

Grant stopped on the steps and gave them a statement.

"I love my wife, but I cannot ignore serious financial misconduct."

Evelyn watched from inside the glass doors.

Celeste stood beside her, trembling with anger.

"He used almost the exact line from the draft."

Marcus's phone buzzed.

He read a message from his technician and looked up.

"We recovered part of the deleted forty-seven seconds from the store server."

Evelyn's heart jumped.

"Does it show the slap?"

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Then his expression darkened.

"But it shows something else first."

He turned the screen toward her.

One frame showed Grant leaning close to Celeste before Evelyn entered.

In his hand was a phone displaying Evelyn's live location.
