Chapter 4 - The Picture Without Her.

Claire did not confront Evelyn immediately after Lily said the word Christmas.

She did something Evelyn clearly did not expect.

She stopped talking.

Claire walked into the kitchen, knelt beside Lily, and asked only one question.

"Do you want to go home?"

Lily nodded.

Daniel was already reaching for her backpack.

Evelyn appeared in the doorway.

"Claire, leaving in the middle of this conversation is childish."

Claire turned slowly.

"The conversation ended when my daughter said she was afraid to tell me what you were doing."

"I never harmed her."

"You made her believe telling me the truth might make me disappear."

Evelyn looked offended rather than ashamed.

That frightened Claire more than an apology would have reassured her.

Robert followed them toward the foyer.

"Please let me explain Christmas."

Lily was pulling on dry socks Daniel had found in an upstairs guest room.

"Go ahead."

Robert looked at Evelyn before speaking.

"Your mother wanted a formal photograph for the family foundation newsletter."

Evelyn had mailed copies to everyone.

Robert, Evelyn, Claire's brother Michael, his wife, and their children stood beneath a garland-covered staircase.

Daniel and Lily had supposedly missed the photo because of traffic.

At least that was what Claire had been told.

"Daniel and Lily were here."

"I thought the photographer had already left."

"He hadn't."

The truth landed piece by piece.

Evelyn had told Daniel the session was over.

Then she had taken the photograph without Lily.

"Why?"

"Evelyn said the foundation photo should show stability."

"And my six-year-old daughter looked unstable?"

"You were overseas again."

"So?"

"So the picture was supposed to represent the family members who actually support the foundation."

Claire almost laughed at the absurdity.

"Lily is a child."

"Lily is part of your choices."

"Be very careful."

His tone was low and controlled.

Evelyn looked at him with open dislike.

"You encourage Claire to keep running off in uniform while everyone else picks up the pieces."

"Claire serves her country and comes home to her daughter."

"When she can."

Evelyn could not stop her from serving.

She could not control her marriage.

So she had found the smallest person in Claire's life and made that child carry the weight of her resentment.

Claire bent down and zipped Lily's coat.

"We're leaving."

"And what are you going to do now?"

"Protect my daughter."

"From her grandparents?"

"From anyone who teaches her she has to earn a place in her own family."

"If you walk out that door, don't expect me to pretend everything is normal next week."

Claire's hand stopped on the doorknob.

Daniel shifted Lily higher in his arms.

"Nothing is normal now."

Outside, the rain had weakened to a steady drizzle.

The three of them crossed the driveway toward Daniel's truck.

"Claire."

He held out an envelope.

"I was going to give this to you next month."

"What is it?"

Robert looked toward the mansion where Evelyn stood behind the glass doors.

"Your mother's new family trust documents."

Claire did not take them at first.

"What do they have to do with Lily?"

"Everything."

Claire accepted the envelope.

Inside the truck, she opened it under the dashboard light.

She found a list of beneficiaries.

Michael's children were named.

Two cousins were named.

Several charities were named.

Lily Bennett was not.

At the bottom, next to a handwritten note in Evelyn's unmistakable script, were five words.

DEPENDABILITY MUST HAVE A STANDARD.

Claire looked back at the mansion.

May you like

This had never been about one rainy afternoon.

Her mother had been erasing Lily one decision at a time.
