Chapter 8 - The Name on the School Form.

Claire and Daniel reached Lily's elementary school in twelve minutes.

Robert followed in his own car.

Principal Anne Foster met them in a small conference room near the front office.

A yellow folder sat on the table.

She looked uncomfortable before anyone spoke.

"I want to be clear that no change has been made to Lily's enrollment."

Claire sat down.

"What was submitted?"

The principal opened the folder.

Inside was an emergency-contact update form listing Evelyn Hayes as Lily's primary local guardian.

"Primary guardian?"

"It was submitted online from the family portal early this morning."

"Only Claire and I have access to that portal."

Principal Foster nodded.

"That is why our secretary called."

The request also attempted to remove Nora Bennett and Daniel's commanding officer's family liaison from the authorized pickup list.

In their place, Evelyn had added herself and Robert.

"I knew nothing about this."

She did not forgive him for everything else, but she believed that statement.

Principal Foster slid another page across the table.

"There was also a note."

DUE TO PARENTAL ABSENCES RELATED TO MILITARY DUTIES, GRANDPARENTS SHOULD BE CONTACTED FIRST FOR ALL SCHOOL DECISIONS.

"She tried to make herself the default parent."

The principal chose her words carefully.

"The request was not accepted."

"Thank you."

"How did she get into the portal?"

Principal Foster looked toward Robert.

"Christmas."

Robert explained that Evelyn had helped Daniel retrieve a school photo while Daniel was carrying presents to the car.

She had seen the login information written inside a household notebook.

"I changed that password months ago."

"You reused the old one last week," Claire said softly.

He had mentioned it casually after a software update.

Principal Foster promised that the school would flag the account and require direct verbal confirmation from both parents for any future changes.

On the drive home, Daniel kept both hands tight on the steering wheel.

"I should have seen what she was doing."

"So should I."

"You weren't here for most of it."

"That's exactly what she wants us to say."

"She turned every absence into evidence against me."

"Your absence isn't the problem."

"I know."

"But Lily has been carrying the argument for us."

She ran to them wearing an apron dusted with flour.

"We made stars."

"I can see that."

For the rest of the afternoon, they did something deliberately ordinary.

Daniel built a blanket fort in the living room.

Claire let Lily paint one of her old storage boxes pink.

At six o'clock, Claire's phone began vibrating repeatedly.

Family group messages appeared one after another.

Her uncle asked why Claire was attacking Evelyn.

A cousin wrote that family matters should stay private.

Another relative said Evelyn was devastated and only trying to help.

"She's getting ahead of the story."

Then a message arrived from Michael, Claire's older brother.

CALL ME BEFORE YOU ANSWER ANYONE.

"Mom called every relative we have."

"What did she tell them?"

"That you came home angry, misunderstood a discipline issue, and threatened to cut her off from Lily."

"Of course."

"There's more."

Claire waited.

"She told everyone Lily has behavior problems because you and Daniel are gone too much."

Claire stood up.

Across the room, Lily was laughing as Daniel tried to fit inside the blanket fort.

"She said that about my daughter?"

"Yes."

Michael paused.

"Claire, I didn't believe her."

"Why not?"

There was a long silence.

Then Michael said the sentence that changed the direction of the entire conflict.

"Because she did the same thing to me when my son Noah was five."
