Chapter 6 - The Drawer in the Study.

Robert went pale.

Claire did not ask Lily how she knew until they were sitting together on the living-room rug.

She wanted her daughter to feel safe, not interrogated.

"Tell me about the picture whenever you're ready."

Lily hugged Bunny against her chest.

"Grandma asked me to get a blue pen from her desk."

"When?"

"Last Saturday."

Lily explained that Evelyn had been preparing invitations in the Hawthorne House study.

One drawer had been open.

Inside was a photograph of Claire at twenty-two in Army training, standing beside Robert and a younger Evelyn.

A heavy black line had been drawn across Claire's face.

On the back, Lily had seen writing she could not fully read.

"I saw my name."

"We're going back."

"Claire shouldn't take Lily there."

"She won't."

Claire called Nora, Daniel's sister, who lived ten minutes away.

Lily happily agreed to spend the afternoon baking cookies with her aunt.

Before Claire left, she knelt beside her.

"You did nothing wrong by seeing that picture."

"Are you going to yell at Grandma?"

"No."

At Hawthorne House, Evelyn's SUV was gone.

Robert unlocked the front door.

The mansion felt colder without Lily in it.

Robert opened the top drawer.

The second drawer contained stationery.

"She started locking this after Christmas."

"Do you have a key?"

Claire noticed a brass key ring on the bookshelf.

Inside were financial papers, foundation correspondence, and a thick cream envelope marked FAMILY.

Claire found the photograph immediately.

Lily had described it perfectly.

A black line crossed Claire's face.

On the back, Evelyn had written a paragraph.

Claire read it in silence.

Robert reached for the desk to steady himself.

The note did not sound like a mother's concern.

It sounded like a verdict.

CLAIRE CHOSE INSTITUTION OVER FAMILY.

LILY WILL LEARN THE SAME LESSON IF WE KEEP REWARDING ABSENCE.

SHE MUST UNDERSTAND THAT BELONGING IS EARNED BY SHOWING UP.

Daniel read it over Claire's shoulder.

His voice was barely audible.

"She made Lily responsible for your career."

Claire folded the photograph carefully.

"She made Lily responsible for my disobedience."

Robert sank into the desk chair.

"I should have seen this."

Claire looked at him.

"You did see parts of it."

"I know."

Claire had no interest in helping him hide behind ignorance.

Robert reached into the cream envelope again.

He pulled out several typed pages.

At the top was a heading.

FAMILY EXPECTATIONS FOR LILY BENNETT.

The list included rules about clothing, speaking only when addressed during formal events, limiting references to Claire's Army work, and requiring Lily to apologize whenever family plans changed because of Claire or Daniel.

Daniel's face went rigid.

"She was going to give this to us?"

Robert shook his head.

"No."

"Then who was it for?"

Robert turned to the last page.

There was a signature line.

And beneath it was another line labeled CAREGIVER ACKNOWLEDGMENT.

Claire recognized the name typed underneath.

MARGARET DALE.

"Who's Margaret?"

Robert looked suddenly terrified.

"The director of a private residential school in Virginia."

Claire stared at him.

"Why is her name on a document about my daughter?"

Robert stood so fast the chair rolled backward.

"Claire, I swear I didn't know."

A car door slammed outside.

They looked toward the window.

Evelyn's silver SUV had returned.

She walked toward the mansion carrying a leather folder.

Claire's eyes dropped to the locked drawer, then to the pages in her hand.

The confrontation they thought had ended the night before had only reached the first door.

And Evelyn was about to walk through it carrying whatever came next.
