CHAPTER 2: A CRACK IN THE STORY

At the hospital, Sophie needed eight stitches.
Eight.
The doctor said she was lucky. A centimeter lower, and it could have been her eye. A little harder, and it could have been worse.
I sat beside her bed, holding her hand as she slept, replaying everything.
The accusation.
The planted phone.
That smile.
And then, the camera.
At 2:14 a.m., while Sophie slept and machines beeped steadily beside her, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
“Ms. Bennett,” a calm voice said. “This is Daniel Ruiz, head of security at the Whitmore Hotel.”
My heart stopped.
“We’ve reviewed the footage.”
