Months later, Sophie stood in the park, laughing as she chased pigeons under the warm afternoon sun.
The scar near her hairline had faded.
But I hadn’t forgotten.
And neither had she.
“Mommy,” she asked one day, holding my hand, “why did Uncle Preston lie?”
I knelt beside her.
“Because some people are more afraid of losing power than they are of losing love.”
She thought about that.

We walked home together.

Just peace.
