Chapter 1 - The Departure

The heavy oak doors of the Sterling estate felt miles away.
Eleanor gripped the handle of her black suitcase until her knuckles turned white.
She had packed only the essentials, leaving behind the glittering dresses and hollow promises.
The foyer was suffocatingly quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of her heels on the marble floor.
Above her, the crystal chandelier cast cold, fractured light across the room.
She just needed to reach the front elevator.
"And where exactly do you think you're going?" a sharp voice echoed from the grand staircase.
Eleanor froze, the familiar knot of anxiety tightening in her stomach.
She turned slowly to face Arthur, the patriarch of the family and the architect of her misery.
He descended the stairs in a tailored grey suit, his expression practically carved from stone.
Behind him, a cluster of relatives gathered like vultures, whispering and watching the spectacle.
Even her cousin Julian had his phone out, recording the drama for his own amusement.
"I'm leaving, Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice remarkably steady.
"You are making a fool of this family," he sneered, stepping dangerously close.
"I am saving myself," she replied, lifting her chin.
She turned her back to him and took another step toward freedom.
Arthur lunged forward, his hand snapping out with blinding speed.
The sound of the slap cracked through the silent foyer like a gunshot.
Eleanor stumbled backward, the sheer force of the blow knocking the breath from her lungs.
She tasted copper instantly.
Trembling, she brought her fingers to her lips and pulled them away to see a smear of bright red blood.
The onlookers gasped, but no one moved to help her.
They never did.
Eleanor stared at the blood on her fingertips, shock rapidly morphing into something else entirely.
The fear that had governed her life for years simply vanished.
In its place, a cold, focused rage ignited within her chest.
She looked at Arthur, whose face was twisted in smug superiority.
"If you walk out, don't bother coming back!" Arthur bellowed, straightening his cuffs.
Eleanor didn't answer right away.
Her eyes darted to the heavy metal fireplace poker resting near the decorative hearth.
She dropped her suitcase.
In three quick strides, she crossed the room and wrapped her hands around the cold iron rod.
The murmurs of the family abruptly stopped.
She turned back toward the center of the foyer, where a priceless, large round glass table sat on a Persian rug.
Arthur took a hesitant step back, his arrogance faltering.
Eleanor raised the heavy metal rod high above her head with both hands.
She didn't hesitate.
With a raw, guttural exhale, she brought it down violently.
The iron connected with the center of the glass table in an explosive crash.
Shards of thick glass erupted outward, raining down across the pristine marble like jagged diamonds.
A chorus of terrified screams filled the air.
Her aunts and uncles recoiled, throwing their hands up to shield their faces.
Eleanor stood amidst the ruin, her chest heaving as she gripped the weapon tightly.
She looked at the terrified faces surrounding her.
"The next person who lays a hand on me..." Eleanor warned, her voice cutting through the ringing silence.
She locked eyes with Arthur, who was now pale and speechless.
She stepped backward, dragging her suitcase with one hand while keeping the rod in the other.
The polished doors of the private elevator slid open behind her.
Eleanor stepped inside, the warm metallic walls offering an unexpected sense of sanctuary.
She kept her furious gaze fixed on her abusers.
"...will be dealing with this," she finished coldly.
The elevator doors slowly slid shut, severing her connection to the Sterling family forever.

As the car began its descent, Eleanor leaned her head back and finally took a real breath.
The journey forward was just beginning.
