Chapter 5 - The Name

She drove for two days straight, stopping only for gas and cheap coffee.

The landscape shifted gradually from bustling, concrete cityscapes to rolling green hills.

She finally crossed the state line, letting out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding.

The little blue sedan hummed reliably along the winding mountain roads.

By late afternoon, she pulled into a small, picturesque town nestled deep in a valley.

A weathered wooden sign greeted her, reading 'Welcome to Oakhaven.'

It looked like a place where people minded their own business and asked very few questions.

Eleanor parked along the quaint main street and stepped out of the car.

The air here was crisp, smelling sharply of pine needles and damp earth.

She walked into a local bakery, her stomach rumbling from the long drive.

She ordered a simple turkey sandwich and picked up a local community newspaper left on a nearby table.

Sitting by the window, she flipped directly to the classifieds section.

She scanned the short list of rental properties, looking for something secluded.

One tiny advertisement caught her eye immediately.

It described a small, furnished cabin on the edge of town, seeking a quiet tenant.

She used her newly purchased prepaid cell phone to call the number listed.

A gruff but polite voice answered after the third ring.

"Hello?" the man said.

"I'm calling about the cabin for rent," Eleanor stated clearly.

"Are you looking to move in soon?" he asked.

"Today, if possible," she replied.

The man agreed to meet her at the property in less than an hour.

Eleanor finished her meal, left a generous tip, and drove to the address provided.

The cabin was modest, constructed of dark, weathered wood and completely surrounded by tall pines.

An older man with a thick white beard was already waiting on the front porch.

"I'm Silas," he introduced himself, extending a heavily calloused hand.

"I'm Nora," she lied smoothly, firmly shaking his hand.

It was the very first time she had spoken her new name aloud.

Silas unlocked the front door and showed her inside the simple space.

It featured a cast-iron wood stove, a tiny kitchenette, and a cozy, sunlit bedroom.

"It is absolutely perfect," she told him, feeling a genuine smile touch her lips.

She paid him the first month's rent in cash.

Silas counted the bills, nodded in satisfaction, and handed her the brass key without asking for a background check.

As his old truck rumbled down the driveway, Eleanor stood alone in her new sanctuary.

She was no longer the terrified prisoner of the Sterling family.

She was Nora now, and she was finally safe.
