Chapter 4 - The Open Road

Eleanor finished the eggs and toast, savoring every simple bite.

She packed her few belongings back into the black suitcase.

The secret funds in her account gave her options, but she needed to be smart.

First on the agenda was securing reliable transportation.

She couldn't risk taking a bus or a train where Arthur's people might easily track her.

Stepping out into the crisp morning air, she walked over to the diner.

Martha was wiping down the counter, humming a quiet tune.

"Feeling better today?" Martha asked, looking up with a warm smile.

"Much better, thank you," Eleanor replied, taking a seat on a vinyl stool.

"I need to buy a used car, something quiet and reliable."

Martha leaned against the counter and thoughtfully tapped her chin.

"My nephew, Tommy, runs a small garage about three blocks down the road."

"He fixes up older models and sells them for a fair price."

"Tell him Martha sent you, and he won't try to pull a fast one on you."

Eleanor thanked her profusely and got directions to the garage.

She also asked where the nearest ATM was located.

After a brief walk to a local bank, she withdrew a thick stack of cash.

It felt strange holding physical money after years of relying on Arthur's monitored credit cards.

She returned to the diner just long enough to hand Martha a crisp hundred-dollar bill.

"For the room, the food, and the kindness," Eleanor insisted when Martha tried to refuse.

"You take care of yourself out there, Eleanor," Martha said, squeezing her hand.

With her suitcase rolling behind her, Eleanor walked down the street to the garage.

The smell of motor oil and old rubber filled the air as she approached.

A young man in grease-stained overalls slid out from under a rusty pickup truck.

"Can I help you?" Tommy asked, wiping his hands on a shop towel.

"Your aunt Martha sent me," Eleanor explained.

"She said you might have a dependable car for sale."

Tommy smiled, immediately relaxing at the mention of his aunt.

He led her to the back of the lot, pointing out a faded blue sedan.

"It isn't going to win any beauty contests, but the engine is solid," Tommy assured her.

"I replaced the timing belt and put on new tires last week."

Eleanor inspected the car, noting the worn seats and scratched paint.

It was perfectly ordinary, which was exactly what she needed to stay invisible.

"How much?" she asked.

Tommy named a price that was incredibly reasonable.

Eleanor counted out the cash and handed it to him without trying to negotiate.

Within the hour, the paperwork was signed and the keys were in her hand.

She loaded her suitcase into the trunk and sat in the driver's seat.

The engine sputtered for a second before settling into a steady, comforting purr.

Eleanor gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles no longer white with fear.

She pulled out of the lot, leaving the city limits and her dark past in the rearview mirror.

The open highway stretched out before her, a ribbon of endless possibilities.
