Chapter 3: The Unraveling
Marissa was escorted out.
She didn’t resist.
But she didn’t look sorry either.
Daniel stayed with Noah through every test, every scan, every injection. Evelyn remained close, her presence steady, grounding.
“You caught it in time,” she assured him. “He’s going to be okay.”
Daniel nodded, though guilt weighed heavily in his chest.
“I should’ve listened,” he said.
Evelyn met his eyes. “Then listen now.”
Noah looked up at him, eyes red but clearer than before.
“I wasn’t lying, Dad.”
“I know,” Daniel said, voice breaking. “I know now. And I’ll never doubt you again.”
That promise meant everything.
Later that night, a police officer arrived.
“Mr. Carter,” he said gently, “we need to take a formal statement. This is a criminal matter.”
Daniel didn’t hesitate.
“Whatever it takes,” he said. “I want her held accountable.”
Across town, Marissa sat alone in a sterile interview room.
