Chapter 2: Shadows of the Past

Within hours, the grand ballroom turned into a private investigation.

Security was called. Old records were pulled. DNA tests were rushed through overnight.

And by morning, the truth was undeniable.

The waitress—known all her life as Lina—was Sofia Laurent, the missing heir to one of the most powerful families in the country.

But the reunion was not as simple as it seemed.

“I don’t understand,” Sofia said, sitting across from Evelyn in a quiet study. “If I was taken… who raised me?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“That’s what we need to find out,” she said. “Because whoever did this… they didn’t just steal you. They erased you.”

As the investigation deepened, a chilling truth began to surface.

The woman Sofia believed was her “mother”… wasn’t her mother at all.

She had been part of a carefully orchestrated kidnapping—a plan designed not for ransom…

But for inheritance.

Twenty years ago, Evelyn’s daughter—Sofia’s real mother—had died under mysterious circumstances. At the time, it was ruled an accident.

But now?

It looked like murder.

And Sofia had been the final loose end.

“She wasn’t supposed to survive,” one investigator admitted quietly. “Whoever took her… must have had a change of heart.”

Or a hidden agenda.

Then came the breakthrough.

A name.

A former family associate who had vanished shortly after the incident.

Marcus Hale.

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“I trusted him,” she said coldly. “He was like family.”

But betrayal runs deepest where trust once lived.
