Chapter 5: What Remains

Months later, the room felt different.
Warmer.
Softer.
Sunlight filtered through sheer curtains, landing gently on the small crib near the window.
Khloe stood there, one hand resting lightly on the edge, watching the slow, steady rise and fall of a newborn’s chest.
Logan leaned against the doorway, not speaking.
He didn’t need to.
After everything—the noise, the silence, the almost—they had arrived here.
Not untouched.
But intact.
Khloe glanced back at him.
“Funny,” she said softly.
“What is?”
“I thought strength meant holding everything together.”
Logan stepped closer, his voice just above a whisper.
“And now?”
She looked down at the child again.
“It means knowing what matters… and protecting only that.”
No grand declarations.
No dramatic music.
Just a quiet understanding settling between them.
Outside, the world kept moving—loud, unpredictable, relentless.
