The hospital did not sleep that night.
Machines hummed, footsteps echoed, and somewhere behind closed doors, lives shifted quietly between fragile and certain. Evelyn sat alone in the waiting area long after Daniel and Madison had gone silent. The truth had been spoken, but it had not yet settled.
Dr. Evelyn Monroe.
A name buried for decades had resurfaced in a single breath.
Daniel stood across from her, arms folded tightly as if holding himself together. “Why didn’t you tell me?” he finally asked.
Evelyn didn’t answer immediately. She studied his face—the confusion, the hurt, the betrayal.
“Because,” she said softly, “you needed a mother more than the world needed another surgeon.”
“That’s not fair,” Daniel snapped. “You made that choice for me.”
“Yes,” she replied, steady. “I did. And I would make it again.”
Madison scoffed under her breath. “Convenient explanation.”
Nathan, standing nearby, intervened quietly. “You have no idea what she gave up.”
